Studies on the Comparative Efficacy of Sulphur, Sulphuric Acid, Ammonium Sulphate and Aluminium Sulphate in Reducing Soil Ph

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were made on the comparative efficacy of sulphur, sulphuric acid, ammonium sulphate and aluminium sulphate in BTRI during 1969 to find out a suitable acidifying material for decreasing soil pH so that it can be used if and when required. Comparison were made in increasing soil acidity over a period of 30 days. Although the effect of sulphuric acid in increasing soil acidity was more pronounced immediately after application but in the long run sulphur was found more effective. Sulphuric acid also was more drastic in reducing organic carbon, nitrogen and available phosphorus contents of the soil than any of the other materials used.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable acidifying material for decreasing soil pH

Methodology:

The acidifying materials used in the study were sulphur, sulphuric acid, ammonium sulphate and aluminium sulphate. A soil sample in bulk from 0-9" depth was collected from the adjacent plot of a section of a tea which was not growing well due to high pH of the soil. The pH of the sample collected was 7.1. Calculated amounts of sulphur, sulphuric acid, ammonium sulphate and aluminium sulphate were mixed with 250 g samples of the processed soil in duplicate. The treatments were: T1= control, T2 & T3= Sulphur 10 and 20mds/ac, T4= & T5= Sulphuric acid equivalent to 10 & 20 mds. Sulphur/ac, T6 & T7= Ammonium sulphate equivalent to 10 & 20 mds. Sulphur/ac, T8 & T9= Alumminium sulphate equivalent to 10 & 20 mds. sulphur/ac. In actual procedure, the acidifying materials were throughly mixed with the soil and soaked with distilled water. The pH values of each of the sample was examined immediately after soaking (0 day) and after 15 days and 30 days of leaching with distilled water. pH was always examined on air dried samples by using Cambridge pH meter. To study the effect of different acidifying materials used on the organic carbon, total nitrogen and available phosphorus contents, each of the treated sample was also examinied. organic carbon and nitrogen were determined by following the procedures described by Piper and available phosphorus was determined by Troug's method.

Achievement/Findings:

Sulphur at the rate of 20mds/ac was most effective in reducing the pH of the soil under investigation. Sulphuric acid equivalent to 20 mds. sulphur/ac was also found effective in increasing the acidity of the soil but it has a greater deteriorating effect on soil organic carbon, nitrogen and available phosphorus contents than sulphur or any of the materials used in this study. Sulphur also reduced the soil constituents but the effect was not as drastic as that of sulphuric acid. Sulphur appears to be the best acidifying material for the soil studied.
