Productive Performance and Genetic Status of Black Bengal Goat Produced at Farmers Level Through Contract Breeding Program

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out using data on Black Bengal goats obtained from a community based breeding program under village conditions. The traits considered for this study were birth weight, monthly body weight and growth rate up to 6 months in different sexes, sires, parities and birth types of the Black Bengal goats. The heritability and breeding value of Black Bengal goats were estimated using REM Land BLUP procedure by VCE and PEST computer programs respectively. The average birth weight of the kids was 1123.80±56.00 g. The overall body weight of kids at 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd, 4^th ,5^th and 6^th months were 3215.01±173.00, 4565.15±216.10, 5963.80±291. 40, 7150±365.40, 7757.70±370.00, and 8300.00±378.50 g respectively. The overall growth rate of Black Bengal goats was 37.84±1.81 g/day. The growth rate from birth to 3 months and 3-months to 6-months of ages were 48.28±3.25 and 27.20±2.16 g/day respectively. The estimated heritability of birth weight, 3-months body weight, 6-months body weight and growth from birth to 3-months, from 3-months to 6-months and from birth to 6-months were 0.649, 0.559, 0.540, 0.623, 0.545, and 0.537 respectively. The estimated breeding values were used to rank the animals. which aided to make selection decision for furthering the program targeted to goat improvement at community level.

Objectives:

To assess the genetic status of Black Bengal goats produced under a Community Based Village Goat Breeding Program to produce superior Black Bengal bucks and their distribution among poor landless farmers.

Methodology:

Improvement of Black Bengal goat through a Community Based Village Goat Breeding Programme started from May 2003 in Khajiakanda and Rishipara villages of Phulpur Upazilla, Mymensingh under the technical supervision of Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh with the financial assistance of Food Security Enhancement Initiative (FSEI), Area Development Programme (ADP), World Vision Bangladesh, Phulpur, Mymensingh. In the rural areas the goat producers were encouraged to establish new flocks with superior males. For that selected female landless small category farmers were organized to form society. All the society members were trained for a period of two days (19-20 May 2003) on scientific aspects of goat production covering breeding, feeding, housing, disease control, record keeping and other managemental aspects. Does were collected from different villages of Mymensingh district based on phenotypic characteristics i.e. body size and having at least two kids born in each kidding. On the other hand, mature Black Bengal bucks were collected from the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), Savar, Dhaka and from the experimental area on the basis of their parents higher litter size records. Collected bucks were distributed to one of the farmers who had previous experience of maintaining breeding bucks and the docs were randomly distributed among the society members in a way that everybody got two does. All animals were individually tagged before starting the work and age of purchased animals was ascertained by dentition. The animals were fed a concentrate mixture of 35% wheat bran, 35% broken lice, 20% mustard oil cake, 5% bone meal and 5% salt at the late pregnancy and early lactation period. In addition to concentrate, green grass and tree leaves were supplied ad libitum. Germinated gram was supplied to the buck every morning @ 150 gm/buck/day. The ADP provided vaccination against major diseases, controlling endoparasites and dewarming. Data were recorded in previously prepared and tested record sheet on different traits at different ages and on average daily weight gain.

In that respect, 6 month body weight of kids was used as selection criteria and animals were ranked on the basis of their 6 month body weight performance. Speaking generally, superior stud bucks with known genetic merit were available to support on-going breeding activity. The superior bucks and does produced through contract breeding programme could be distributed to other groups for replication of this programme in other areas of the country to improve our national Black Bengal goat resources. The present study therefore, indicates that with minimum effort Black Bengal goats could be genetically improved at the village level through community based pure breeding program.
