Influence of Soil Texture and Available Moisture on Growth of Clonal Plant

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in BTRI to study the influence of soil texture and available moisture on growth of clonal plant during 1966-68. B201/39 clone was planted in both sandy loam and sandy clay loam soils. The results revealed that plants can be grown successfully on both the types of soil. But on sandy loam soil higher percentage of soil moisture is required.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable texture and moisture level for the growth of clonal tea

Methodology:

Two soil samples in bulk collected from BTRI Farm were dried, processed and analyzed for mechanical composition and organic matter content. The pounds of air dry soil was put in earthen pots which were then kept in a growth house. Three months old cuttings of clone B201/39 were planted in each plot in the month of December, 1966. The available moisture content of the soils in each pot was maintained by Bouyoucus moisture meter and putting one Gypsum block at the root zone of the plant. The following treatments with different soil textures and moisture levels (S1= Sandy loam, S2= Sandy clay loam, M1= 30-40% and M2= 40-50% available moisture levels) were included in this study. The treatments were replicated four times in a Randomized Block Design and the treatment combinations were: T₁= S1M2, T₂= S1M2, T₃= S2M1 and T₄= S2M2. The average plant characteristics such as height of plant, stem-root diameter, root length, number of branches, leaves and dry weight of the plants were recorded in respect of soil types moisture levels.

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed that clonal plants could be raised on either sandy loam or sandy clay loam soils. However, the best vegetative growth of the plants was found in sandy clay loam soil having available moisture content of 30-40%. In case of sandy loam soil the growth was found better with moisture content of 40-50%.
