Efeect of Phosphatic Fertilizer on the Growth of Tea Cuttings in the Nursery

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Success of clonal plantation largely depends on production of healthy plants in the nursery and phosphatic fertilizer was found to play a significant role for the production of healthy plants. In the present experiment, surface soil of sandy loam type having pH 5.3 was mixed thoroughly with different doses of triple super phosphate per cubic yard while filling in polythene sleeves. One-leaf cuttings of clones TV1 and B201/39 were then planted after four weeks of setting the soil and maintained the plants for 52 weeks. Result indicate that the application of triple super phosphate @ 8-12 ounces per cubic yard at the times of preparation of soil is highly beneficial for the growth of tea cuttings.

Objectives:

To find out the requirement of phosphatic fertilizer on the growth of tea cuttings in the nursery in Bangladesh condition

Methodology:

The top soil (from 0-6" depth) of sandy loam type collected from the nursery area of BTRI, was processed and mixed throughly with triple super phosphate before filling the polythene sleeves, each of 12" long and 4" diameter. The total phosphate and potash contents of the soil used were 0.33 and 0.23% respectively, while the nitrogen and organic matter on the reactive part of the soil were 0.97 and 30.6% respectively. The pH value of the soil was 5.3. The soil after being filled in the polythene sleeves, was allowed to settle for four weeks with occasional watering. Standard one-leaf cuttings of the clones TV1 and B201/39 were planted in the sleeves. The experiment was laid out under split plot design with six treatments replicated thrice. Twenty sleeves were placed in two rows per plot. The treatments included were 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 ounces of triple super phosphate per cubic yard of soil with a control. Observations in respect of shoot height, stem diameter and weight of shoots and roots were recorded after 52 weeks of growth.

Achievement/Findings:

Results found that triple super phosphate up to a certain limit was beneficial for growth of tea cuttings in the nursery when planted in polythene sleeves. Application of triple super phosphate @ 8-12 oz/cu. yd. of soil was found to be necessary to raise healthy plants from cuttings. Depressing effect was marked with the increase of dose of triple super phosphate beyond 12 oz/cu.yd. The requirement of phosphatic fertilizer for producing healthy plants differs with different clones.
