Parasitic Infestations and Their Influence on Length and Weight of the Host, Heteropneustes Fossilis

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on parasitic infestations of Heteropneustes fossilis and their influence on length and weight of the host was conducted during July 2012 to June 2013. The host fish samples were collected from Sylhet region of various water bodies like haor, beel, ponds etc. Sex, total length, standard length, head length and weight of hosts were recorded. Six different species of parasites were identified from the hosts examined, Euclinostomum multicaecum, Allocreadium handiai, Lytocestus indicus, Pseudocaryophyllaeus heteropneustus, Procamallanus heteropneustus and Paracamallanus equispiculus. Moderate infestations were found in H. fossilis. Prevalence varied in different months. The highest prevalence (69.57%) was observed in November and the lowest (33.33%) in July. Length and weight were found greatly affected due to parasitic infestations. Loss of total length was 3.39% and the highest gain of mean head length was 4.07% found in higher level infested larger length group fish. The highest loss of weight 9.08% was also found in larger length group fish. Key Words: Heteropneutes fossilis, parasitic infestations, length and weight.

Objectives:

To evaluate certain effects on length and weight of H. fossilis due to parasitic infestations.

Methodology:

A total of 210 Shingi, H. fossilis were collected for the experiment during the period from July, 2012 to June, 2013. Live and fresh fishes were collected from Bandar market supplied from different haors named as Hakaluki haor, Tanguar haor etc. in Sylhet district. Besides this the fishes were also collected from local fish markets around SAU, Balurchar bazar and Majortila bazar of Sylhet town. After collection, they were brought to the Disease Laboratory, Department of Fish Health Management, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet in polythene bags or bucket with water in live condition for investigation. Before investigation the source of the fish was recorded in a data book, the total length (TL), standard length (SL), head length (HL), sex and weight of the fish were recorded. The host fish were also divided into 3 length groups (12-16, 17-21 and 22-25 cm). The host fish were anesthetized by chloroform or killed by cutting at the neck region. A slit was made on ventral side near the genital pore on anal region and was opened towards the head up to the opercular region. After careful opening the stomach and the intestine were removed and put in a petridish containing water for parasitic investigation. First the external part of stomach and intestine was washed and opened the entire alimentary canal for the collection of parasite. After collection, the parasites were kept in normal saline for relaxation, flattened and fixed in F.A.A. Some of the parasites were prepared for permanent slides. The collected parasites were identified and analyzed as Prevalence (%) percentage of host infested, mean intensity the number of parasites per infested host and the abundance the mean number of parasite per examined hosts. The standard method was adopted to find out the relationship between the head length and the total body length.

Achievement/Findings:

An investigation on effect of parasites in relation to length and weight of host fish H. fossilis was conducted during the study period. During investigation 210 H. fossilis were examined. Among them 118 fish were infested and 92 fish were uninfested. Six different species of parasites were identified. Maximum infestation was found in November and minimum in July. The length and weight were found significantly affected. The loss of total length and the highest gain of mean head length was found in heavily infested of larger length group fish. The highest loss of weight was found in larger length group fish.
