The study attempted to describe and determine I) the selected characteristics of the farmers; ii) the extent of preference of farmers for using power tiller related to land preparation; and iii) to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the farmers and their preference for using power tiller related to land preparation. Majority of the farmers of the study were in the young category (42 per cent) followed by 30 per cent old and 28 per cent middle aged_ Educational level of the farmers were found in equal proportions in illiterate and primary level (both 35 per cent) white. nearly one-fort (23 per cent) to secondary and a small proportion (7 per cent) were in above SSC level. Overwhelming majority of farmers (82 per cent) had medium general knowledge in agriculture while 57 per cent had medium and 41 per cent high general knowledge in agricultural implements. Majority farmers (60 per cent) had medium cosmopoliteness and over one-third (40 per cent) high. Nearly one-half of the farmers (47 per cent) had medium income and one-third (38 per cent) law and a small proportion (15 per tent) high. The family farm size of the majority farmers was small (45 per cent). one-third (33 per cent) medium and over nee-fifth (22 per cent) large. Over one-t.'hird {42 per Cent) farms had low innovativeness while one-third (33 per cent) medium and one-forth (25 per cent) high. Overwhelming majority of farmers (90 per cent) of the study had shown high preference for using power tiller related to land preparation, which underline its potential and usefulness in present day agriculture of Bangladesh. Out of eight se[ected characteristics of farmer cosmopoliteness and innovativeness had positive correlation with their preference for using power tiller in land preparation.

  Performance
  1. to describe selected characteristics of farmers;
  2. to determine the extent of preference of farmers for using power tiller related to land preparation; mid
  3. to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of farmers and their preference for using power tiller related to land preparation.

Populations Locale and Collection of Data: Sixty farm families (1 percent of the total farm population) of village Goneshampur under Mymensingh sadar thana of Mymensingh district was the sample and locale of this piece of research. The heads of the farm families were selected as the population of this study. Farm holdings which had own land and possessed at least a country plough or a power tiller or both for tilling were considered as the farm families of the study. A set of interview schedule was the instrument used for collecting data in this piece of research. A draft interview schedule was prepared in accordance with the objectives of the study. The interview schedule was presented on 10 farmers, necessary corrections, additions and alterations were made in the interview schedule based on the presented results Data were collected by the researchers through personal interview procedure with the help of adult leaders of the village. The interview of each farmer was conducted separately and the procedure for answering each of the queries according to the interview schedule were explained to them.

Variables of the Study: any factors are likely to influence the farmers preference for using power tiller related to land preparation, After careful consideration eight selected characteristics of farmers were included as independent variables, among them four personal namely age, education, general knowledge in agriculture and general knowledge in agricultural implements; one social namely cosmopoliteness: two economic namely family income and family farm size and one psychological namely innovativensess. The preference of farmers for using power tiller related to land preparation was the dependent variable of the study.

Measurement of Variables: One dependent and eight independent variables were selected for this study. The variables were measured by developing different scales and assigning weights to different categories. The scales and weights were initially selected through review of literature and final selection were made by discussing with experienced researchers and extension personnel.

Analysis of Data: Data collected for this study were compiled, tabulated and analysed in accordance with the objectives of the study, Various statistical measures such as number, percentage distribution range and average were used in describing the extent of preference of farmers for using power tiller related to land preparation and the selected characteristics of the farmers .Simpie linear correlation test was done to examine the relationship of the independent variables with the dependent variable. Throughout the study, five percent (0.05) level of probability was the basis for determining statistical significance.

A significant number of farmer of this study expressed their opinion in favour of power tiller risk context of present day agriculture, The farmers who have better innovative and cosmopolite background, would normally susceptive to new technologies and overall development of agriculture. Hence, their confidence in power tiller for land preparation Is understandable. The overall higher values of the favorable opinion indices of power tiller use reflects the obvious necessity of mechanical tilling in present day agriculture. To confront future challenges of Bangladesh agriculture farmers confidence in power tiller for tilling would nave been recognized by the policy planners in future agricultural strategy formulation.
