Reproductive and Productive Performance of Different Dairy Breeds at Baghabari Ghat Milk Producer's Co-operative Union Limited

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The aim of the study was to investigate the birth weight of calves, age at puberty, age at first calving, service per conception, post-partum heat period, milk yield, gestation period, lactation length and calving interval of the Sahiwal xLocal (SLxL) and Holstein- Friesianx Sahiwal (HFxSL) cows. The average birth weight of calves, age at puberty, age at first calving, service per conception, post-partum heat period of SLxL crossbred cows were 23.44±1.61 kg, 958. 73±229.04 days, 1258.45±240.11 days, 1.41 ±O. 63, 116.28±38.02 days respectively and 25.81 ±1.52 kg, 723.94±9I.62 days, 1011.38±90.16 days, 1. 13±O.34, 96.88±31.08 days respectively for HFxSL crossbred cows. Average gestation period and calving interval were 284.64±6.68 days and 402.34±37.51 days for SLxL and 286. 18±6.01 days and 382.83±37.96 days for HFxSL respectively. Average milk production of SLxL and HFxSL crossbred cows were 8.80±1.62 and 12.5±2.29 litres per day, respectively. The total milk production of HFxSL (3234.5±661.52 litres) was higher than the SLxL (2059±544.36 liters) cows per lactation. The highest milk production was in the second lactation (8.82 liters and 12.5 litres for SLxLand HFxSL cows respectively). Average lactation length of the SLxL and HFxSL crossbred cows were 269.88±45.28 and 291.96±20.49 days, respectively.

Objectives:

1.To know the age at puberty, service per conception, post-patum heat period, age at first calving, calving interval and birth weight in different crossbred cows. 16.

2.To know the milk production and lactation length of the SLxL and HFxSL crossbred cows in our country.

Methodology:

The present study was undertaken in the Baghabarighat milk shed areas under Bangladesh Milk Producer's Co-operative Union Limited (Milk Vita), a large dairy pocket area of Bangladesh, located at Sirajganj district. The data were collected from two villages namely Rashambari under Sirajganj district and Harturia under Pabna district, as because the viIlages had their Prathamic Dugdha Uthpadankari Sarnabaya Somity (PDUSS). The following steps were practiced in collecting necessary data.Selection of the studied area: The reasons for selection or MiIk Vita areas were: • A large number of crossbred cows are raised in this area. • A large milk pocket area in Bangladesh. • No study of this type was conducted previously in this area. • Co-operation from the respondents was expected to be high, so that the reliable data would be obtained.Sources and description of animal: A total of 72 dairy cows belonging two genotypes (56 SLxL and 16 HFxSL) were selected. The animals which have at least two lactation records were used in this study and their information; regarding, birth weight of calves, age at puberty, age at first calving, service per conception, gestation period, post-partum heat period, milk yield, lactation length were collected from the owners. The overall managemental condition of the animals were almost similar to the condition prevailed in these two villages.

Time and methods of data collection: The Present work was conducted at Milk Vita areas. Rice straw, Kheshari (Lathyrus sativus) and matikalai (Phaseolus mango) supplemented compound feeds from Milk Vita were also supplied to the cows during the experimental period. Compound feed prepared from til oil cake, rice polish, wheat bran, kheshari bran etc. To attain accurate and reliable of data care and caution were taken in course or data collection.

Parameters studied The following parameters were studied to measure the reproductive and productive performances of different crossbred cows. • Birth weight of calves, Ages at Puberty, Service Per Conception, Post-partum heat period, Gestation period, Calving interval, Milk Yield, Lactation length.

Achievement/Findings:

Results of the present study on the productive and reproductive performances indicated that the milk production of HFxSL crossbred cows was higher than that of SLxL cows. For further improvement, we have to be eager enough and should have practical necessary steps to enhance the productive and reproductive performances of different existing crossbreds in our country. Although economic dairy characters of indigenous milking cows were poor than crossbred cows but even we cannot ignore our indigenous cows keeping in mind that we should develop our own genotypes which will be easily adaptable and high yielding. Afterwards, a selection programme may be implemented considering the genotype of the cows to maintain our local germplasm and at the same time fixation of high yielding germplasm of the desirable line to satisfy the national need.
