Drought Effects on Dry Matter Production, Grain Growth and Yield in Aromatic Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four pot experiments were carried out with six aromatic rice genotypes to assess the effects of water stress on photosynthesis, dry matter production, grain growth and yield during July to December 2013-2014 at BINA, Mymensingh. Control (100% FC) and water stress (30% FC) were imposed on Binadhan-13, Kalizira, BRRI dhan34, Ukunimadhu, RM-100-16 and NERICA rice genotypes at maximum tillering, panicle initiation and grain filling stages and discontinued when the specific stage was over. Separately the above treatments were also maintained during grain growth period. The experiment was laid out in a Complete Randomized Design with three replications. Water stress decreased grain dry weight, photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content of flag leaf. The highest grain dry weight, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate were found in NERICA. Grain dry weight increased with age till 24 days after anthesis followed by a Plateau whereas SPAD reading and photosynthesis rate decreased with grain age until physiological maturity. Water stress affected plant height, number of spikelets and filled grains hill^-1 and total dry matter hill^-1 but number of effective tiller hill^-1 and 1000-grain weight were not affected. Binadhan-13 produced the highest grain yield with the lowest sterility followed by NERICA under the treatments.

Objectives:

(i) to investigate dry matter production;

(iii) to determine yield attributes and their relationships with yield in six rice genotypes

Methodology:

Four pot experiments were carried out with six rice mutant/varieties viz., Binadhan-13, Kalizira, BRRI dhan34, Ukunimadhu, RM-100-16 and NERICA at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during July to December 2013 and 2014. Control (100% FC) and water stress (30% FC) were imposed on rice genotypes at maximum tillering, panicle initiation and grain filling stages and discontinued when the specific stage was over. Separately the above treatments were also maintained during grain growth period for grain growth studies. The soils were collected from BINA farm. Each pot contained 8 kg of soils. The experiment was laid out in a Complete Randomized Design with three replications. Grain dry weights of 10 grains of selected panicles, chlorophyll content (SPAD reading) and photosynthetic rate of flag leaf were measured at 3 days interval from fertilization to maturity. Photosynthesis was recorded using Portable Photosynthesis System LI-6400XT, LI-COR Inc., Lincoln, NE, USA. Data on yield and yield attributes were also recorded at maturity.
