The effects of some commercial preparations of sulphonamides and potentiated sulphonamides were studied on certain biological performance and organic changes in 45 healthy White leghorn laying hens. The oral administration of ideally recommended dose ( IRD ) and double of the recommended dose ( DRD ) of Sulphaclozin sodium ( Esb3-30%(R), Novartis ) @ 2.5 g and 5.0 g / kg body weight, Sulphadiazine plus Trimethoprim (Sufatrim(R), Techno Drugs) @ 0.5 g and 1.0 g / kg body weight, Sulphaquinoxaline 25 % (Embazine(R) powder, Rhone-Poulenc) @ 2.5 g and 5.0 g / kg body weight, and Sulphacloropyridazine sodium plus Trimethoprim ( EST-Plus(R) powder, Ethical Drugs) @ 2.5 g and 5.0 g / kg body weight orally for 28 days on every alternate day in laying hens did not alter in feed intake, water consumption, egg production performance and thickness of egg shell. However, papillomatosis skin lesions developed in all the groups of laying hens following IRD and DRD of drugs after withdrawal of drug trial. The lesions were observed to be prominent even on post trial period. The egg weight and body weight of laying hens were significantly ( P < 0.01 ) reduced during trial and also post-trial period in both the IRD and DRD. A number of organic changes including pale coloured liver and spleen, congestion of lungs, haemorrhagic congestion of mesenteric vein and partial parenchymal damage of kidney were noticed in all the groups of laying hens following the drugs (Esb3-30%(R), Novartis; Sulfatrim(R) Techno Drugs; Embazine(R), Rhone Poulenc and EST-Plus(R), Ethical Drugs) in both IRD and DRD with the unaffected heart muscle upon comparing with the changes in control group after trial period.

To determine the sulphonamides and potentiated sulphonamides on some biological performances and organic changes in laying Hens

Forty five healthy, productive White leghorn laying hens within 5 months of age and weight between 1100 to 1400 g were purchased from the poultry farm of Barama at Sreepur thana in Gazipur district which were used for this study. These experimental hens before using them into drug trial were dully acclimatized, supplied with balanced diet and confirmed parasite free following negative fecal test. Four drugs viz. Sulphaclozine sodium ( Esb330%(R), Novartis ), Sulphadiazine and Trirnethoprim ( Sulfatrim(R), Techno Drugs ), Sulphaquinoxaline ( Embazine(R) powder, Rhone Poulenc) and Sulphacloropyridazine sodium and Trimethoprim ( EST-Plus(R), Ethical Drugs) were purchased from local market and used for this study. The selected 45 laying hens were divided into 9 groups ( A to I ), each consisting of 5 birds. Birds of group A were kept as untreated control, and the eight groups ( B to I ) were used as treatment groups. Of the eight treatment groups, each bird of groups ( B, D, F & H ) received drugs as recommended dose of the manufacturer which was regarded as ideally recommended dose ( IRD ) and birds of the remaining four groups ( C, E, G & I ) received double dose which was regarded as double of the recommended dose ( DRO). The selected drugs were administered orally in every alternate day for 28 days as per schedule. All the treated and control groups of hens were closely monitored for 28 days during trial period and 14 days post-trial period to explore the possible effects of the drugs. The physio- biological effects of the drugs like change in feed intake and water consumption, nature and extent of skin lesions, egg production performance, thickness of egg shell, weight of eggs and body weight ( pre and post-trial) were recorded. In addition, one hen from each group employed with IRO and ORD of the selected drugs were sacrificed for post-mortem examination to explore and compare with control hens on post-mortem changes. Statistical analysis The collected data on various parameters were sorted and scrutinized using computer aided data based software ( d-Base 4.0 Astontate Ltd. ). The results were expressed as Mean ± SD and analyzed statistically by using student 't' test.

The present study could be due to the adverse pharmacokinetics effect of drugs. The sulphonamide and sulphonamide plus trimethoprim drugs even at the recommended doses may produce pathological changes when withdrawal period get prolonged.
