Effect of Some Growth Regulating Substances on Tea Cuttings

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

For quick multiplication of desired plant types, the vegetative propagation of tea is in vogue. Studies on the effect of growth promoting hormones on the rooting of tea cuttings have recently been made in many tea Research Organizations but no conclusive results have yet been achieved. The present study was therefore initiated to evaluate the effect of growth regulating substances such as Rootone- a proprietory product, Acid Indolylbutyric and α-Naphthalene acetamide on the rooting behaviour of clonal cuttings namely BT1, TV1 and RSI. With the application of growth promoting hormones, a positive improvement in strike was obtained in clone BT1 and TV1 but they did not appreciably induce rooting in clone RSI. Different growth reguliting substances affected differently on the root system. α-Naphthalene acetamide produced more number of strong roots while Acid Indolylbutyric produced more fibrous roots. Rootone had no visible effect whatsoever on the root system.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of growth regulating substances on the rooting behaviour of clonal cuttings

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in 1975 at the Institute Farm under a split plot design with the following treatments: T₁= Rootone, T₂= Acid Indolylbutyric @ 150 ppm, T₃= Acid Indolylbutyric @ 200 ppm, T₄= α-Naphthalene acetamide @ 150 ppm, T₅= α-Naphthalene acetamide @ 200 ppm and T₆= Control. Before planting, the basal end of the cutting used in T₁ and T₆ were immersed in water, while those in T₂-T5 were soaked in respective solutions of Acid Indolylbutyric and α-Naphthalene acetamide for 24 hours. At the time of planting, the cuttings of T₁ were dipped in Rootone. Fifty cuttings were planted in each treatment. During the run of the experiment the usual cultural practices were followed. Observations on survivality, stem-height and diameter, number of roots per plant, shoot and root weight were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Growth promoting hormones improved the rooting of tea cuttings but this improvement was not remarkable in very poor rooter clone suggesting thereby that it did not break the inherent resistance to rooting. Acid Indolylbutyric produced profuse small fibrous root while α-Naphthalene acetamide helped producing more number of desirable strong roots.
