Selection of Elite Mutants Based on Morpho-physiological Characters and Yield in Kharif-ii Season of Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to investigate the morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and yield in ten mungbean genotypes. The genotypes were MB-16, MB-17, MB-23, MB-35, MB-44., MB-45, MB-46, MB-47, BARImung-4 and Binamoog-4. Among these, BARImung-4 and Binamoog-4 were released as varieties and the rests were advanced mutants. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design with four replications. The studied genotypes showed significant differences for all the morpho-physiological and yield components. Results revealed that high yield genotypes showed higher number of branches and leaf area plant^-1, greater chlorophyll content in leaves, greater TDM production and showed higher AGR compared to low yielding ones. Similarly, high yield genotypes produced higher number of pods plant^-1 and seeds pod^-1 than the low yielding ones which resulted in higher seed yield in mungbean. The genotype MB-17 and MB-35 showed superiority in respect of yield contributing characters resulting in the highest seed yield (7.62-7.81 g plant^-1). In contrast, MB-23, MB-46, BARImung-5 showed the lower value in case of the above studied parameters which resulted in lower seed yield (4.00-4.43 g plant^-1) but MB-16 and BARImung-4 matured earlier (61 days) than the others.

Objectives:

To assess the performance of eight promising mungbean mutants along with the two check cultivars on the basis of morphological, physiological and yield attributes; and to select better genotypes based on yield performance and other superior characteristics.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from September to November 2006 to investigate the morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and yield in ten mungbean genotypes. The genotypes were MB-16, MB-17, MB-23, MB-35, MB-44, MB-45, MB-46, MB-47, BARImung-4 and Binamoog-4. Among these, BARImung-4 and Binamoog-4 were released varieties and the rests were advanced mutants. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design with four replications. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

High yielding genotypes have higher number of branches, LA, TDM and AGR which resulted in higher number of pods than the low yielder in mungbean; and among the genotypes, MB-17 and MB-35 performed the best with respect to morpho-physiological, yield and yield attributes.
