Evaluation of Advanced Soybean Mutants on the Basis of Morpho-physiological Criteria

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was to investigate morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and seed yield in three soybean advanced genotypes viz., BAU-21, BAU-70, BAU-80 along with two cultivars viz., Shohag and BARIsoybean-5. LA, LAI and AGR increased till 80 days after sowing (DAS) followed by a decline due to leaf shedding at later growth stages where nodule number increased till 65 DAS. The genotype BAU-70 showed superiority in respect of plant height, branch, pod bearing node and nodule number, TDM, LA and growth parameters like LAI, AGR and RGR at most of the growth stages and also produced the highest seed yield whilst BARIsoybean-5 showed the inferiority in case of plant height, branch number, LA, LAI, AGR and RGR. Similarly, BAU-70 produced higher number of pods plant^-1 resulting higher seed yield. BAU-70 also showed greater dry matter partitioning to economic yield than the others. In contrast, the variety Shohag produced the lowest number of pod plant^-1 and also showed the lowest seed yield. Among the genotypes, BAU-70 produced the highest seed yield due to morpho-physiological superiority than the others.

Objectives:

To evaluate the growth and development of three elite soybean genotypes (BAU-21, BAU-70 and BAU-80) compared to the existing two varieties (Shohag and BARIsoybean-5); and to select better genotype in respect to growth, yield and yield components.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from November 2005 to March 2006 to investigate morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and seed yield in five soybean genotypes/cultivars. The five soybean genotypes/varieties were BAU-21, BAU-70, BAU-80, Shohag and BARIsoybean-5. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP) and gypsum were used as source of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur @ 40, 120, 80 and 40 kg ha^-1, respectively. Total amount of Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were applied at basal doses during final land preparation. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of six harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological parameters, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 35 DAS and continued at an interval of 15 days up to 110 DAS i.e. till attaining physiological maturity. From each sampling, five plants were randomly selected from each plot and uprooted for collecting necessary parameters. The plants were separated into leaves, stems and roots and the corresponding dry weight were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2⁰C for 72 hours. The leaf area of each sample was measured by LICOR automatic leaf area meter (Model: LICOR 3000). The growth analysis like AGR and RGR were carried out following the formulae of Hunt (1978). At harvest, yield components were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

High yielding genotypes have taller plant, higher number of branches, nodules, leaves as well as LAI, TDM and AGR which resulted higher number of pods plant^-1 than the low yielder in soybean; and among the genotypes, BAU-70 produced the highest seed yield due to morpho-physiological superiority than the others.
