Studies on Mungbean Yield in Relation to Flower Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate flower production, flowering pattern, reproductive efficiency, yield attributes and their relationship with seed yield in 15 mungbean genotypes. Results revealed that the high yielding genotypes produced greater number of opened flowers (range 27.3-41.3 plant^-1) having longer flowering duration (range13-15 days) than the low yielding ones. In contrast, low yielding genotypes produced fewer opened flowers (range 16.5-26.8 plant^-1) and also showed shorter flowering duration (range 9-10 days). It was also appeared that high yielding genotypes had higher flower production rate over time than the low yielding ones and maximum flower production occurred within 10 days after flowering started. Results further revealed that high yielding genotypes maintained taller plant height, greater branch number, increased leaf area, TDM, increased flower and pod number/plant. In contrast, low yielding genotypes produced fewer branches, shorter and narrower plant stature, fewer flower and pod plant^-1. Seed yield had highly significant and positive correlation with pod number (r = 0.805 **), leaf area (r = 0.712 **) and TDM/plant (0.865 **). Mutants E₁J-606 and E₂J-210 showed the best performance in respect of reproductive efficiency, yield and yield contributing characters among the genotypes under study.

Objectives:

To assess the magnitude and pattern of flower production.
To investigate the relationship between reproductive efficiency and seed yield; and
To study the performance of 10 mungbean genotypes on the basis of morpho- physiological and yield attributes.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from February to May, 2006 to investigate flower production, flowering pattern, reproductive efficiency, yield attributes and their relationship with seed yield in 15 mungbean genotypes. The genotypes were E₁J-605, E₁J-606, E₂J-210, E₅J-1011, E₅J-1014, N₁M-110, E₅I-1004, E₃J-805, E₄I-519, E₂I-711, N₃J-305, N₃J-303, E₄I-515, E₄I-525 and Binamoog-5. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design with four replications. The pots filled with well mixing thoroughly with given amounts of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash and gypsum at the rate of 0.70, 1.05, 0.60 and 0.80 g/pot corresponding to 40, 80, 60 and 40 kg/ha, respectively. Earthen pots of 30 cm diameter and 35 cm height were used for the experiment. The pots of the experiment were filled with 12 kg of soils. Daily flowers count was recorded from days to flowering start until flowering ceased. At harvest, yield components were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

High yielding genotypes have synchronous higher number of flowers than the low yielder in mungbean. Total opened flowers is more important than increase reproduction efficiency to get higher yield and two mutants viz., E₁J-606 and E₂J-210 performed the best in respect of reproductive efficiency, yield and yield contributing characters.
