Discrimination of Mungbean Genotypes in Respect of Morphological Attributes and Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty two advanced mutants of mungbean were put into trial along with two cultivars to assess variability of morphological and yield attributes. The name of the studied mutants and varieties were: N₁M-111, E₅I-1011, N₅M-513, E₂I-714, N₄I-413, E₂J-712, L-49, N₁M-102, E₁J-613,E₃I-822, N₃J-305, E₅M-1001, E₅I-1004, E₅J-1014, E₄I-515, MB-16(1), MB-16(2), MB-23, MB-35, MB-45(1), MB-45(2), MB-45(3), Binamoog-5 and Binamoog-7. E₂J-712 was the shortest and the mutant E₅J-1014 was the tallest. Branches were mostly alike for most of the mutants despite a few of the mutants had shown significantly lower branches/plant. Pod number was the highest in E₅M-1001 and was indifference from three mutants, L-49, N₁M-102 and MB-35 although it did not show the higher yield due to its smaller pod and seed sizes. For seed yield over locations, results showed that no genotype had consistent yield superiority over all locations. But MB-35 and Binamoog-7 showed cooperatively more consistent over locations. For mean seed yield over locations, MB-16 (1), MB-35, MB-45(2) and MB-45(3) showed the highest seed yield and showing insignificant differences from Binamoog-7, Binamoog-5, N₄I-413, L-49 and MB-45(1). However, N₁M-111 matured 7-18 days earlier than the tested genotypes.

Objectives:

To study variability in morphological characters and yield attributes in mungbean genotypes.

Methodology:

Twenty two advanced mutants of mungbean were put into trial along with two cultivars. The experiment was set up at three locations of Ishurdi, Magura and Rangpur sub-stations of BINA during Kharif-1, 2006. The name of the studied mutants and varieties were: N₁M-111, E₅I-1011, N₅M-513, E₂I-714, N₄I-413, E₂J-712, L-49, N₁M-102, E₁J-613,E₃I-822, N₃J-305, E₅M-1001, E₅I-1004, E₅J-1014, E₄I-515, MB-16(1), MB-16(2), MB-23, MB-35, MB-45(1), MB-45(2), MB-45(3), Binamoog-5 and Binamoog-7. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 9.0 m ´ 3.0 m. Each plot consist of 24 lines and each row contain one genotype which denotes a replication. Row to row and plant to plant distances were 30 and 10 cm, respectively. All plots were fertilized during final land preparation with 40 kg N, 80 kg P₂O₅ and 60 kg K₂O per hectare in the form of urea, TSP and MP. Normal cultural practices were followed whenever needed. Data on morphological, yield and yield contributing characters were recorded at maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

The mutant MB-35 showed consistent yield superiority over locations. Another mutant N₁M-111 matured 7-11 days earlier than the two check cultivars. These two mutants need further evaluation in the coming season in order to see their yield stability.
