Nitrogen Assimilation of Fine Grain Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to find out the response of fine grain rice genotypes to different levels of urea application. The genotypes were RM 100-5, RM 100-16 and Ukunimadhu. The four levels of nitrogen were 0, 10, 20 and 30 kg/ha. Result showed that plant height and chlorophyll content in leaf increased with increasing N levels, where as number of tillers/hill, grains/panicle and grain and straw weight/hill, grain yield and crop growth rate increased till 20 kg N/ha followed by a decline. The highest straw weight and grain yield were recorded with 20 kg N/ha due to higher number of effective tillers/hill, grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight followed by 10 kg N/ha. In contrast, the lowest grain weight was recorded with 30 kg N/ha and control due to fewer tillers/hill and 1000-grain weight. Among the genotypes, RM 100-16 and Ukunimadhu performed equally in yield but showed superiority over RM 100-5. The interaction effect of genotypes and N level on grain yield was non-significant (Not shown). Finally, it could be concluded that for getting higher grain yield of the studied genotypes, application of 20 kg N/ha would be sufficient but need further studies.

Objectives:

To find out the response of fine grain rice genotypes to different levels of urea application.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh during T. aman season of 2007 to find out the response of fine grain rice genotypes to different levels of urea application. The genotypes were RM 100-5, RM 100-16 and Ukunimadhu. The four levels of nitrogen as urea were 0, 10, 20 and 30 kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in a Split-plot design with four replications where variety was placed in the main plot and N levels in the sub-plots. The unit plot size was 2 m x 3 m. Urea was applied in two splits, at 15-d and 45-d after transplanting. Chlorophyll was determined at panicle initiation stage and plant samples were collected two times at 60 and 75 DAT to determine crop growth rate (CGR). Cultural operations, such as weeding and pest control were done as and when necessary. Yield and yield contributing characters were recorded at harvest.
