Determination of Nitrogen Requirement for BINAtomato-6 Based on Nitrate Reductase Activity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to determine the accurate metabolic requirement of nitrogen by tomato variety for its optimal productivity on the basis of a key enzyme for nitrate assimilation, the nitrate reductase (NR). Binatomato-6 was selected as test crop. Three nitrogen doses viz., 50, 100 and 150 kg N/ha were used. Nitrogen was applied as urea. Urea was applied in five equal splits at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 days after transplanting (DAT). Results showed that NRA varied significantly due to different N-doses at all growth stages. NRA increased with plant age till flowering seize and fruit development stage (80 DAT) followed by a decline. Results showed that NRA increased significantly up to 100 kg N/ha, thereafter a plateau NRA with the highest dose of N indicating higher biological activity at that dose of 150 kg N /ha. Results indicated that N requirement was the maximum during flowering and fruit development stages. Therefore, final application of urea should be before flowering finishing and fruit development stages.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh during Rabi season of 2011-2012 to determine the accurate metabolic requirement of nitrogen by tomato variety for its optimal productivity on the basis of a key enzyme for nitrate assimilation, the nitrate reductase (NR). Binatomato-6 was selected as test crop. Three nitrogen doses viz., 50, 100 and 150 kg N/ha were used. Nitrogen was applied as urea. Urea was applied in five equal splits at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 days after transplanting (DAT). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), gypsum and cowdung were applied at the rate of 250, 180, 80 and 10000 kg ha^-1, respectively (BARC, 2005). Total amount of TSP, MP, gypsum and cowdung were applied as basal doses during final land preparation. Unit plot size was 3.5 m x 4.0 m. Plant spacing was 50 cm for plant to plant and line to line distance. Recommended cultural practices were followed for plant growth and development. Nitrate reductase activity was determined from 30 DAT to every 10 days interval up to final harvest. Data on yield attributes and fruit yield were also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

100 kg N/ha was sufficient for normal plant growth and development of tomato if urea was applied frequently with 20 days interval.
