Determination of Phosphorus Requirement of Aromatic Rice Cv. Kalizira

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at AEZ-9 to investigate the effect of different levels of phosphorus application on the growth, yield attributes and yield of fine grain rice cv. Kalizira. The experiment comprised six levels of phosphorus application: T₁ = Control (0% RFD of P); T₂ = 60% RFD of P (4.8 kg P ha^-1); T₃ = 80% RFD of P (6.40 kg P ha^-1); T₄ = 100% RFD of P (8.0 kg P ha^-1); T₅ = 120% RFD of P (9.6 kg P ha^-1) and T₆= 140% RFD of P (11.2 kg P ha^-1). The all plant parameters and P content and uptake by the crop was significantly influenced by different levels of phosphorus application. Yield attributes and yield increased with increasing P levels up to 140% RFD of P (11.2 kg P ha^-1) and the result reached a peak at 120% RFD of P (9.6 kg P ha^-1). The highest grain yield and P content in grain and straw were recorded with 140% RFD of P ( 11.2 kg P ha^-1) which was statistically similar to 120% RFD of P (9.6 kg P ha^-1). Therefore, application of 120% RFD of P (9.6 kg P ha^-1) along with other fertilizers may be practiced for profitable fine grain rice cultivation in the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ 9).

Objectives:

To assess the effect of different levels of phosphorous on the growth and yield of fine grain rice cv. Kalizira; and to evaluate the effect of different levels of phosphorous application on P content and uptake by fine grain rice, Kalizira.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultral University, Mymensingh during the period from 08 July to 07 December 2009. The experimental field was medium high land belonging to the Sonatola Soil Series of Grey Floodplain soil under the agro-ecological zone of Old Bahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ-9). The soil was silty loam. Fine grain transplant aman rice, variety Kalizira was used in the present experiment. There were six treatments consisting of different doses of phosphorus fertilizer including one control treatment such as 0, 4.8, 6.4, 8.0, 9.6 and 11.2 kg/ha. The initial soil sample was collected before land preparation from the plough depth (0-15 cm) for analysis of soil composition and nutrient content. The other fertilizer doses were: N 60, K20, S8 and Zn 1 kg/ha. The experimental plots were fertilized with phosphorus during final land preparation as per treatments. The recommended doses of K, S and Zn were applied at the time of final land preparation. Recommended dose of nitrogen was applied in the three equal splits at 12, 33 and 55 days after transplanting. The morpho-physiological attributes, yield contributing character were recorded from 10 plants of each plot. The plot yield was converted in to tons/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

Growth and yield of fine grain rice were affected by different levels of phosphorus application. Among the phosphorus fertilizer treatments, 9.6 kg P ha^-1 (120% RFD of P) was the best for optimizing grain yield of fine grain rice cv. Kalizira in the AEZ-9.
