Effect of Organic Fertilizers on Potato Production at Northern Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different organic fertilizers on growth and yield of potato. The treatments were: two cultivars viz., Cardinal and Diamant and three organic fertilizers viz., cowdung @ 10 t/ha, RDRS organic fertilizer @ 740 kg/ha and Northern organic fertilizer @ 500 kg/ha with a control. The results revealed that yield attributes and yield were significantly higher in organic fertilizers than control. Among the treatments, the highest TDM, CGR, tuber growth rate, tuber number plant^-1 and larger tuber were observed in cowdung which resulted the highest tuber yield (30.66 t/ha) followed by RDRS organic fertilizer (27.85 t/ha) and Northern organic fertilizer (27.60 t/ha). In contrast, control produced the lowest tuber yield (20.19 t/ha) due to production of fewer numbers of tuber plant^-1 and larger tuber size. Considering economic analysis, Cardinal gave higher net income and benefit-cost ratio than Diamant. Among the organic fertilizers, cowdung gave the highest net income as well as benefit-cost ratio. RDRS organic fertilizer being second in performance of both yield and economic return can also be promoted as an alternate organic fertilizer if cowdung is not readily available on commercial basis.

Objectives:

To study the growth and yield of potato as influenced by different organic fertilizers; and to select suitable organic fertilizer for getting higher yield economically for potato production in the northern region of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farmer’s field of Rajendrapur village, Rangpur during the period from November 2006 to February 2007 in order to evaluate the effect of different organic fertilizers on growth and yield in potato. The treatments were: two cultivars viz., Cardinal and Diamant and three organic fertilizers viz., cowdung @ 10 t/ha, RDRS organic fertilizer @ 740 kg/ha and Northern organic fertilizer @ 500 kg/ha with a control. Other recommended chemical fertilizers viz., NPKSZnB were also added in each treatment. The two-factor experiment was laid out in a Split Plot Design with three replications where varieties were in the main plot and organic fertilizers in the sub-plot. The crop was periodically harvested and harvesting of the crop was started at 45 days after planting (DAP) for data collection and continued till 85 DAP. The final harvest was done at 90 DAP. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Organic fertilizers have tremendous positive effect on growth, yield attributes and yield of potato. Cowdung has greater effect on potato yield than RDRS and Northern organic fertilizers and also gave the highest net income as well as benefit-cost ratio; and Cardinal is superior to Diamant in respect of growth, yield attributes and yield and Cardinal with cowdung @10 t/ha is best suited for obtaining maximum tuber yield of potato.
