Duck Rearing System in the Coastal Regions of Bangladesh During Rainy Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted in two southern coastal districts of Bangladesh (Noakhali and Lakshmipur) to know the existing duck rearing system of the regions in rainy season. One upazila from each district and three villages from each upazila were selected randomly. Fifty farmers were selected from each village at random, based on the duck population of farmers having at least 5 ducks throughout the year. Thus, a total of 300 farmers were selected for this study. Primary data was collected by using an interview schedule. Results showed that the majority of the farmers (38.5%) belonged to middle-age category. Ninety nine per cent farmers annually earned Taka 1501.00 from duck rearing. The majority of the farmers (82%) involved in rearing Deshi ducks followed by Crossbred (12%) and Hybrid (6%). Forty five per cent of the respondents cleaned their duck houses 2-3 times in a month whereas only II per cent cleaned their duck houses everyday, 21 per cent once in month, 18 per cent 4-6 times in a month and 5 per cent farmers cleaned their duck houses 7-10 times in a month. Sixty two per cent farmers reared ducks in scavenging condition with only natural feed resources and only 38 per cent farmers used supplemental feed, mainly rice polish in an amount of 63 g daily. The majority of the farmers (85.5%) in both districts did not use vaccines against duck diseases. However, 9 per cent of the farmers buried their dead ducks somewhere else. Results showed that 79 per cent egg production was found in rainy season followed by winter (13%) and summer (8%). It was found from the study that most of the farmers (70%) preferred to sell their eggs and ducks to the foria and in local market. It was also observed that duck raising would be more profitable business if the problems related to it could be solved. In terms of profitability, income and employment generation, duck rearing appeared to be a promising sub-sector.

Objectives:

Methodology:

In order to obtain an up-to-date information on duck rearing system, the study was conducted in two southern coastal districts of Noakhali and Lakshmipur during rainy season. The main criteria behind the selection of study areas were the availability of large number of duck raisers, availability of ponds and ditches to every household, good communication system, lack of any scientific study on duck production system was carried out so far in these areas and the areas were under the action programme of Smallholder Livestock Development Project-2 (DANIDA-DLS). One upazila from each district and three villages from each upazila were randomly selected. Fifty farmers from each village were selected randomly. Thus, a total of 300 duck rearers (150 from Noakhali sadar and 150 from Ramgoti upazila) who reared at least 5 ducks throughout the year constituted the sample of this study. Although ducks are the part of the daily life of farmers of these areas, but maximum number of ducks are reared in rainy season. Therefore, this season was considered as peak period for the study. Data were collected from July to August, 2003 through face-to-face interviews using an interview schedule. The data so collected were coded and analyzed to draw the inference. Frequency, mean, percentages, co-efficient of variation, standard deviation were used to explain data scientifically.

Achievement/Findings:

From the present study it may be concluded that duck production in coastal regions of Bangladesh is hindered by low productivity of indigenous ducks, unavailability of improved ducklings, high price and inadequate supply of quality feeds, lack of knowledge on duck nutrition and management, lack of training facilities, absence of organized marketing system, out break of diseases, shortage of vaccines and high mortality rate. Establishment of duck hatcheries in the area with an ensured egg marketing system, availability of quality feeds, vaccines and training facilities are the pre-requisite for the development of duck production system. Duck rearing has gained popularity in the coastal regions of Bangladesh. From the point of view of profitability, income and employment generation duck rearing appears to be a very promising sub-sector which can be identified as a 'Thrust- sector', It has an enormous potentiality for expansion in the southern coastal districts.
