Effect of Supplemental Feeds on the Growth of Carps Cultured in Cages in the Kaptai Lake

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The results obtained from different feeding trials on composite culture of Hypopluhalmicthys molitrix (Val.) Labeo rohita (Ham) catla catla (Ham) and C. Mrigala (Ham.) in folaring net cages in Kaptai lake for a period of twelve months are presented Fishes were stocked at the rate of 15 individuals m^-2. Three supple mented feeds prepared from rice bran, mustard oil-cake, fish meal and wheat bran were administered at the rate of 10 per cent of body weight day^-1. Fishes were found to survive well the inerdence of mortality ranged from 8 to 14 per cent. The gain in weight exhibited by different treatments were statistically significant (P<0.05) over control. Treatment 11 gave the highest growth but the increment was not statistically significant over treatment I and III. Among the four different speeches L. rohita showed the best results in terms of growth followed by H. molitrix.

Objectives:

To formulate a suitable supplementary feed using indigenous raw material, which could give optimum yield in reasonably short period.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the Kaptai lake for a period of 12 months from January 2, 1988 to January 8, 1989 in twelve floating net cages. Studies on the growth of stocked fishes were made with respect to three variables of feed i.e. feed-I, feed-II and feed-III. The response of variables was growth in terms of weight gain. Twelve net cages were divided into three treatments blocks on the basis of feed composition each with one control and three replications. The net cages, each measuring 2.0 x 2.0 x 1.5 were constructed for the present study. Each cage was a trough shaped enclosure of synthetic knotless netting of 10.4 mm mesh fitted to the inner side of a bamboo rafts. Metallic rod and synthetic ropes were used to fix the drums with the frame. The cages were kept afloat in such a way the 1.om of the structure remains below water and the remaining 0.5m is kept above. One feeding tray made of clay, locally called ' Shanki' was hung loosely in each cage with the help of nylon twine and was kept suspended about 0.5 below the water level. The top of the structure was covered with a nylon net to prevent fishes from escaping by jumping as well as from the outside predators. Fishes were stocked at the rate of 15 individual m^-2, where H. molitrix were 40, L rohita 25, C. mrigala 25, C. catla 10 percent respectively. Sampling on physico-chemical factors were done at 30 days interval. Water samples were collected from the surface on sampling day between 09:00 hrs and 11:00 hrs. Water temperature was recorded in all the cages a a depth of 10 cm with a centigrade thermometer. Water transparency was measured by secchidisk. When the transparency was more than 1.5 m the sechidisk was dipped in the outside water adjacent to the cages. pH dissolved oxygen free carbondioxide total hardness and alkalinity were determined by the methods as described by APHA.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of physico-chemical parameters of cage waters are presented. It appears that most of the parameters in cage water were within the desirable range. Thus it may be said that the variation in growth in different treatment was not related with physico-chemical factors but due to the effects of supplementary feeds. The gain in weight exhibited by different treatments were statistically significant (P<0.05) over control. Treatment 11 gave the highest growth but the increment was not statistically significant over treatment I and III. Among the four different speeches L. rohita showed the best results in terms of growth followed by H. molitrix.
