Nutrient profile of compound broiler feeds manufactured in 3 feed mills of Bangladesh (A, B and C) was investigated and their effects on productive performance and meat yields were determined in a feeding trial with 240 day-old commercial broiler chicks (Cobb-500). The chicks were randomly distributed in 12 different pens with 20 chicks each that constituted an experimental unit. Compound broiler feeds manufactured in 3 feed mills (feed mills A, Band C) were randomly considered from 10 feed mills and different diets from each feed mill were assigned to birds in 4 different replicate groups (pens) each of 20. The broilers of all treatment groups were supplied feeds and water ad libitum throughout the experimental period. Other management procedures including lighting pattern, vaccination, litter management etc. were identical for all feed mill groups. Nutrient status of the diets of 3 feed mills although varied, was more or less similar except the protein content. Crude protein content was highest in the diets of feed mill C. It appeared from birds' live performance that highest final body weight and lowest FCR were 1752.5 g and 1.37 respectively in birds that received diets from feed mill C during a period 30 days only. Results of productive performances of 3 treatments were very much acceptable but results from the birds that received feeds from feed mill C appeared to be most satisfactory. Differences in edible meat yield characteristics such as dressing yield, weights of thigh meat, breast meat, wing meat, liver, heart and abdominal fat did not differ significantly among birds receiving diets from different feed mills. Drumstick meat of male-female combined sexes that received feeds from mill A was better than that of feed mill B & c. Gizzard weight of female and male-female combined in birds receiving feeds of feed mill A & B were better than that of feed mill C. The performance of commercial broilers fed feeds from different feed mills was satisfactory although birds that received diets containing highest protein level of feed mill C showed best results and found to be most cost effective.

1.To investigate the performance of broilers in terms of their growth, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), survivability and meat yield characteristics.

2.To compare the quality of the compound broiler feeds based on nutrient status and birds' performance.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Poultry Farm, Mymensingh. Two hundred forty day-old Cobb-500 commercial broiler chicks were procured from the hatchery of Renata Agro industries Ltd., Kashar, Bhaluka, Mymensingh. There were three dietary treatment groups having 4 replications of 20 birds each.Out of ten previously selected feed mills, three industrially prepared compound broiler feeds of Bangladesh named A, B and C were randomly considered and used for the experimentation, The broilers of all treatment groups were supplied feed and water ad libitum throughout the experimental period. The feeds and water were supplied 6 times during the first week and then 4 times daily. Birds were vaccinated against Newcastle disease. Health status of birds was monitored every day. The duration of the trial was 30 days only.Initial body weight of day-old chicks was recorded immediately after their arrival in the house. Body weight was taken weekly and finally at 30 days of age in the afternoon (5 pm) prior to feeding time. Feed intake was calculated from the amount supplied at each time and amount retained at the end of each week and finally at 30 days. Feed intake was adjusted for mortality after necessary calculations. The feed conversion ratio for a particular period was calculated dividing the total feed consumed, by the cumulative body weight attained at that period. The mortality of broilers in each replication within a treatment was recorded when death occurred for any reason. The temperature and relative humidity in the experimental house at chick level were observed frequently during the first 3 weeks and then recorded thrice daily with the help of a digital thermo-hygrometer.At the end of experiment, 8 broilers (4 males and 4 females) from each treatment weighing average of the pen weight were selected and slaughtered for processing. All birds to be slaughtered were kept off feed overnight but drinking water was provided ad libitum. Data on dressing yield and weights of thigh meat, breast meat, liver, gizzard, heart, wing and abdominal fat contents were recorded. All of the weights related to carcass characteristics were expressed as percentage of live weight.

On the basis of the results of this experiment it may be concluded that variation in crude protein (CP) contents of compound broiler feeds exists among the feeds manufactured in feed mills considered in this study. The productive performance of broilers in terms of feed intake, weight gain, feed efficiency, survivability and meat yield characteristics was quite satisfactory and acceptable for commercial broiler production. The compound feeds manufactured in 3 feed mills considered in this investigation may be considered as quality feeds although highest CP content in feeds of feed mill C appeared to be the major determinant of most satisfactory performance of birds that received diets from this particular feed mill. The next logical steps would to be carry out experimentations with feeds of some other commercial feed millers and to investigate their keeping quality by determining the date of expire to discourage the use of feeds deteriorated in quality in order to avoid detrimental effects on birds performance.
