Sprayer Nozzles Characteristics Used in Pesticide Application to the Crop Field

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out during the period from July' 97 to May' 99 in the Department of Farm Power and Machinery, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Four different types of spray nozzles, namely: Kwung Sung, Naboti 910M, Rabi 707M and Bulgaria were tested evaluate their performances in the laboratory. Discharge of nozzles increased with the increase of the flow numbers of nozzles and discharge also increased significantly with the increase of pressure from 1 to 8 kg/cm². The relationship between discharge and pressure were y = 415.76x^0.3702 for nozzle Kwung Sung, y = 470.34x^0.371 for Naboti 910M, y = 912.49x^0.3108 for Rabi 707M and y = 1279.90x^0.3199 for Bulgaria. Nozzle Kwung Sung delivered the lowest discharge and nozzle Bulgaria delivered the highest discharge at the same pressure. The spray angle of nozzles increased significantly with the increase of pressure from 1 to 4 kg/cm². The spray angle with higher pressure (> 4 kg/cm²) was statistically identical. Nozzle Naboti 910M showed higher spray angle and nozzle Bulgaria showed the lowest spray angle at the same pressure. For all four types of nozzles, the flow paths of droplets were parabolic in shape Nozzle Rabi 707M covered the maximum swath and nozzle Bulgaria covered the minimum swath at the same nozzle height and pressure.

Objectives:

To calibrate the nozzle discharge, to study the nozzle spray angle, to study the flow path of spray liquid, and the flow number of nozzles using empirical equations.

Methodology:

A pressure cylinder was constructed to preserve spray liquid with high pressure. An air compressor was connected with hose pipe to the pressure cylinder to develop pressure. A spray gun was constructed and was connected to the outlet port of pressure cylinder. The spray gun consisted of a control valve and a pressure gauge. Four different types of nozzles were collected from the market that were available and were used by farmers. They are i) Kwung Sung (made in Korea), ii) Naboti 910M, iii) Rabi 707M and iv) Bulgaria. The flow number of the spray nozzle refers to the effective flow area. Flow number was calculated. All four types of selected nozzles were calibrated. Discharges were recorded against a pressure range of 1 to 8 kg/cm². Five tests were done for each nozzle. The discharges were plotted against pressure and a regression model was fitted for every nozzle. The data were analyzed with one- way ANOVA model and LSD test was clone among the mean difference. Three tests were conducted to calibrate the spray angle of each nozzle against a pressure range of 1 to 8 kg/cm². Nozzle was fixed at 10 cm height. A constant pressure was maintained with the control valve of spray gun. A graduated scale was set at 10 cm below the nozzle tip and the maximum width of spray was recorded. Spray angles were calculated against pressure range of 1 to 8 kg/cm², The angles were plotted against different pressures and a regression model was fitted for every nozzle. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA model and LSD was done among the mean difference. To conduct the test, two parameters such as nozzle heights and nozzle pressures were considered. The nozzle height levels were taken as 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 cm. The pressure levels were taken as 1, 2, 4 and 6 kg/cm².

Achievement/Findings:

Nozzle with desired discharge could be designed using flow number. The desired discharge of spray liquid could be maintained by varying nozzle pressure. Lower level of pressure provides less discharge and higher nozzle pressure provides more discharge. The higher nozzle height covers more area and using this principle, spray concentration could be maintained. Lower nozzle height provides higher concentration and higher nozzle height provides less concentration. By varying nozzle height, the desired area could be sprayed.
