Use of Ipm Practices in Vegetable Cultivation by Women Farmers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of this study was to determine the use of IPM practices by the women farmers in vegetable cultivation and to explore relationships between selected characteristics of the women farmers and their use of IPM practices. Form among 341 women farmers under 15 FFS in Hossainpur upazila, Kihsoregonj, 102 were selected at random. Data were collected using a personal interview schedule during August and September 2003. Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient (r) was used to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the women farmers and their use of IPM practices in vegetable cultivation. Forty one Per cent of the respondents had medium use of IPM practices while 38 and 21 Per cent of them had high and low use of IPM practices respectively. Out of ten selected characteristics of the respondents, education, contact with extension media, knowledge of IPM, and attitude towards use of IPM in vegetable cultivation had positive significant relationship, while age had a negative significant relationship in this regard. The rest of the characteristics namely, annual income, farm size, training received, cosmopoliteness, and had no significant relationship with their use of IPM practices in vegetable cultivation.

Objectives:

To identify some IPM practices used by the women farmers and the level of their use in vegetable cultivation.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in Hossainpur, one of the vegetable IPM upazilas under Kishoregonj district. Vegetable IPM was first conducted in this upazila as one of the pioneer works of sPFt project. Population of the study were the women farmers who were using IPM in vegetable cultivation. Total number of women FFS was 15 and each FFS contained 25 women farmers. Each FFS was divided into 5 groups. Thus, 341 rural women of 15 FFS in Hossainpur upazila constituted the population of the study. Out of 341 women farmers, thirty Per cent (30%) was selected as sample by simple random sampling method. Thus, the sample size of the study was 102. The use of 10 selected IPM practices of the women farmers was the dependent variable of the study. The respondents asked to indicate against each of the pest management practices whether they used the practice 'frequently', 'occasionally', 'rarely' and 'never'. Scores assigned to the above four responses were 3, 2, 1 and 0, respectively. Thus, the range of IPM practice in vegetable cultivation score of a respondent could vary from 0 to 30, where 0 indicated no use and 30 indicating frequent use of different IPM practices in vegetable cultivation by the women farmers. Data were collected using the personal interview schedule during 03 August to 03 September 2003. Pearson's product moment correlation co-efficients were computed to explore the relationships between selected characteristics of the farmers and their use of IPM practices in vegetable cultivation.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of the study revealed that majority (79 Per cent) of the respondents had medium to high use of IPM practice. Only 21 Per cent of them had low use of IPM practice. Thus, there is enough opportunity for launching motivational programmes to popularize different environment friendly practices i.e. IPM. Younger to middle aged women should be given emphasis in that respect and they should be encouraged to motivate their older member of the society to use different IPM practices. However, more personal contact is necessary to convince the older women in that respect. Increase of mass literacy may be an important measure to popularize use of different environment friendly practices. Similarly, women farmers should have enough knowledge of IPM practice use. Group discussion, training session would help increase their knowledge. Women should not be kept confined within the four walls of their family. A communication strategy should be undertaken involving mixed of appropriate media to increase their knowledge and to persuade them. Personallocalite channels may play vital roles for persuasion where mass media can increase their awareness and knowledge. Formation of a favourable attitude towards the use of IPM in vegetable cultivation may lead to increased use of different IPM practices by the rural women.
