Effect of Time of Grafting and Scion Shoot Maturity on the Cleft Grafting Performance of Bael

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of time of grafting and scion shoot maturity on the cleft grafting performance of bael at the Horticulture Farm of BAU, Mymensingh during the period from March, 2007 to September, 2008. The experiment comprises five times of grafting; (i) June 25, 2008, (ii) July 10, 2008, (iii) July 25, 2008, (iv) August 10, 2008 and (v) August 25, 2008 and two types of scion shoot maturity (i) mature scion (1 year old); (ii) young scion (6 months old). The treatment June 25, grafting exhibited the highest percentage of graft success (75.49) and survivability (61.99), while August 25 grafting had the lowest (55.87) graft success and survivability (47.86). Matured scion demonstrated higher percentage of graft success (70.52) and survivability (59.19) compared to these of (62.35 and 52.76 respectively) of younger scion. Grafting on June 25, combined with matured scion resulted in maximum percentage of graft success (80.14) and survivability (65.41) at 1.5 months after grafting. The treatment combination of August 25, and young scion gained the lowest percentage of graft success (52.43) and survivability (45.34). Maximum increase in stionic height (12.98 cm) was noted in August 10, grafting as compared to minimum (11.83 cm) increase in grafting on July 25 at 1.5 months after grafting. Maximum increase in stionic height (12.61cm) was found in younger scion as compared to minimum (12.26 cm) increase in matured scion at 1.5 months after grafting. When grafting was done in young scion on June 25, the highest increase in stionic height was recorded.

Objectives:

To find out the appropriate time of cleft grafting and proper stage of scion shoot maturity for successful cleft grafting.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Horticulture Farm of BAU, Mymensigh during the period from March, 2007 to September, 2008. The rootstocks used in the experiment were raised from the seeds of local bael variety. The scion shoots used, were collected from the selected superior plant of bael growing in the different villages of Mymensingh Sadar Upazilla. The two factor experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Five different time of grafting; (i) June 25, 2008 (T₁); (ii) July 10, 2008 (T₂); (iii) July 25, 2008 (T₃); (iv) August 10, 2008 (T₄); (v) August 25, 2008 (T₅) and two scion shoot maturity; (i) Mature Scion (O) [1 year old] (ii) Young Scion (Y) [6 Months old] were included as treatments. Data on percentage of graft success, number of days required to first leaf emergence, number of days required to first leaf opening, increase in stionic height, number of leaves per graft, canopy volume, number of shoots (primary branches) per graft, number of secondary branches per graft, increase in plant height and percentage of graft survivability were recorded. Different parameters of the study were analyzed statistically using MSTAT programme. The means of all the treatments were calculated and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for all the characters under study were performed by F variance test at 5% and 1% levels of probability. The significant differences of the treatment means were compared by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

The results obtained from the investigation revealed that cleft grafting on 25 June with mature scion exhibited the highest graft success (80.14%) and survivability (65.41). Therefore, this treatment combination may be recommended for the successful multiplication of bael.
