Studies on the Microfinance for Women Development Sponsored by Grameen Bank in Some Selected Areas of Comilla District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study is an attempt to assess the extent of empowerment of women by the micro finance programme of Grameen Bank. Seventy-five samples were randomly selected from Burichang upazila under Comilia district. Survey method was followed to collect the required data. Tabular as well as statistical techniques were used wherever necessary to analyse the data. The study reveals that overall income of the respondents has increased to a greater extent due to CB entrance in the area. Loans obtained from the bank were observed to have been used mostly for productive purposes. Cent percent loan was found to have been repaid in time. Self-consciousness was the major factor to insist the borrowers to timely repay the loan. Economic as well as social status of the respondents has improved due to GB activities in the study area. Women's decision-making ability increased to a greater extent since they have been involved with micro finance programme of CB. The study suggests for adopting more sustainable programme by GB in order to alleviate poverty from rural areas of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

i) To examine the income, expenditure and savings pattern of the respondent women before and after joining at GB.

ii) To investigate the patterns of loan utilization by the respondent women in the study area.

iii) To assess the changes in socioeconomic status of the respondents after joining GB loan programme.

iv) To examine the status of women in decision making process before and after joining the micro finance programme of GB.

Methodology:

As the study deals with the role of GB on women development through micro finance programme, the study area was purposively selected where GB branch situated at Purba Burichang .A simple random sampling technique was used for the study. A total of 75 members were selected from 2015 members of the study area. The required data recorded in the well-designed interview schedules. The period covered by the study was July /99 to June/2000. A number of relevant tables were prepared and paired "t" test was done wherever felt essential for the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Following conclusions may be drawn on the basis of the findings achieved in the study:

1. Women are good associates of the socio-economic development of the family as well as of the country. They can contribute significantly to the socio-economic improvement of the family if proper atmosphere as well as facilities can be ensured.

2. Annual income of the beneficiaries has increased to a greater extent due to GB loan extension in the area.

3. The respondents received required amount of credit during the year.

4. Respondents used loan money for productive activities during the year.

5. Standard of living of the respondents has improved due to the GB loan programme.

6. Women participation in decision making of family affairs has greatly increased after joining GB loan programme.

7. Education of the women borrowers shown a significant positive relationship with the decision -making ability of the respondents. Higher the education of the respondents higher the possibility of decision-making ability.
