Overcoming Alternate Bearing Habits of Some Mango Germplasm Through Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Germplasm Centre (GPC) of Fruit Tree Improvement Programme (FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during two successive years (2010 and 2011) to overcome alternate bearing habits of some mango germplasm through management practices. Twelve varieties viz. Gopalbhog, BAU Aam-3, Khirsapat, BAU Aam-4, Hybrid-10, Amrapali, Mallika, BAU Aam-1 (Sraboni-1), BAU Aam-5, Fazli, Ashwina and Kent were taken under study. The different management practices were sanitation pruning, application of fertilizers and application of irrigation. The different ages of plants were 3-4 year and 6-7 year. From the experiment, in the year 2010, among the twelve varieties the highest number of leaves was recorded from Gopalbhog variety under management in 6-7 year age and the lowest was found in Kent variety without management in 3-4 year age. The highest number of harvested fruits was obtained from BAU Aam-1 variety under management in 6-7 year age whereas the lowest from Hybrid-10 variety without management in 3-4 year age. On the basis of percent edible portion, stone pulp ratio Ashwina variety was considered to be the best among the twelve varieties followed by Fazli and the worst was Gopalbhog and Amrapali. The highest TSS and shelf-life was found in Khirsapat variety under management in 6-7 year age. On the other hand, in the year 2011, among the twelve varieties the highest number of leaves was recorded from Gopalbhog variety under management in 6-7 year age and the lowest was found in Kent variety without management in 3-4 year age. The highest number of harvested fruits was obtained from BAU Aam-1 variety under management in 6-7 year age whereas the lowest from Ashwina variety without management in 3-4 year age. On the basis of percent edible portion, stone pulp ratio Ashwina variety was considered to be the best among the twelve varieties followed by Fazli and the worst was Gopalbhog and Amrapali. A nice observation was found that, under management all the varieties gave better result than that of without management in both years. So, alternate bearing habits of mango may be overcome through proper management practices.

Objectives:

To study overcoming alternate bearing habits of some mango germ plasm through management practices.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Germ plasm Centre (GPC) of Fruit Tree Improvement programme (FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during two successive years (2010 and 2011). The experiment consisted of three (3) factors. Factor A: different varieties. (i) Gopalbhog, (ii) BAU Aam-3, (iii) Khirsapat, (iv) BAU Aam-4, (v) Hybrid-10, (vi) Amrapali, (vii) Mallika, (viii) BAU Aam-1(Sraboni-1),(ix) BAU Aam-5, (x) Fazli, (xi) Ashwina and (xii) Kent; Factor B: Different management practices. 1. Under management (sanitation pruning + fertilization + irrigation practices) and 2. Without management (control). Factor C: Two groups of ages. As, (i) 3-4 year and (ii) 6-7 year. The three-factor experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The total number of plants was 12×2×2×3=144. Planting was in hexagonal system giving spacing of 4 m. The collected data on different parameters were viz., plant height, number of side branches per plant, number of leaves per plant, the longest leaf size, time of first flower opening, time of initial fruits setting, average panicle size, number of fruits per plant at marble stage, number of dropped fruits per plant, time of harvesting, number of harvested fruits per plant, number of cull fruits per plant, yield, average fruit size, average weight of individual fruit, average weight of pulp, average weight of stone, percent edible portion, pulp to stone ratio, shelf life and TSS. The collected data on different parameters were statistically analyzed using MSTAT computer programme. The means for all the treatments were calculated and analysis of variance was performed by F-test. The mean difference between a pair of treatments was evaluated by LSD at 5 % level of significance.
