Study of the Draught Cattle Management Systems at Farmers Level

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was a field survey to investigate the management systems of draught cattle in three villages of Mymensingh district. The data were collected through a pretested questionnaire from 150 farmers taking 50 farmers from each village. It appears that young animals are trained for draught purpose at the age of 23.63±1.59 months and the period of training is 17.26±5.27 days. Almost 100% of the farmers (land size 0.00-0.50 acre) use thatched house and 63% of the farmers (land size 4.51 acre or above) use tinshed house for their cattle. About 68.62% farmers (land size 0.00-0.50 acre) keep their cattle for night sleeping and comfort (p<0.01). Daily routine activities by the farmers were described. The integration of land in attached to living house-crop-draught cattle was discussed to understand the present farming system and the environment. More research is needed in draught cattle management system at village level for farming system and environmental development.

Objectives:

To investigate the management system of draught cattle in three villages of Mymensingh district of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The present study was a field survey to investigate the management system of draught cattle in three villages of Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. The three villages namely Shohilaty, Daulatabad and Noishimul were selected from different than of Mymensingh district. The data were collected (January 1996 to February 1996) through a pretested questionnaire from 150 farmers taking 50 farmers from each village. It was not possible to include all the farmers in the villager due to limitation of time. money and personnel. For minimizing time and costs 150 farmers were selected randomly from the selected study area. An up to- date list of all the farmers and draught animal users of the selected villages was prepared with the help of a head man in respective village. Three villages were in the same agro-ecological zone and the majority of the farmers cultivate their land by draught cattle. The parameter studied on management systems are training of cattle, housing, daily routine activities of the farmer and interaction of land- crop-draught cattle. The data were compiled, tabulated, coded and analysed in accordance with the objectives of the study. For statistical significance Chi-square test was used for describing the findings.

Achievement/Findings:

The daily routine activities of a rural farmer in the management system of draught cattle were observed. It was found that most of the daily routine work such as cleaning of the house. feeding of cattle, water supply, milkino of cows grazing and preparation of feed mixtures were performed during 1st half (6.00 am to 12.00 am) of the day. In the evening (1.00 pm to 6.00 pm) straw was supplied for eating overnight and proper housing facilities was arranged to sleep at night in comfort.Efficient use of livestock resources can increase food production, cash income and provide employment in the farm. Efficient management by integration of animal, crop and land would increase food production, generate income sources for the farmer and help to protect environment.Appears that young animals are trained for draught purpose at the age of 23.63±1.59 months and the period of training is 17.26±5.27 days.
