Adoption of Livestock Technologies and Its Relationship with Selected Characteristics of the Farmers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of livestock technology adoption of the farmers with their six selected characteristics. Data were collected from 131 randomly selected farmers of Musuddi Union of Madhupur Thana under Tangail District. Study shows that about two-third majority of the respondents were illiterate, nearly half of them got medium family size, an overwhelming majority (Three-fourth) had medium farm size and same proportion of them had low extension contact. Out of those six selected characteristics, only education, family size and farm size of the respondents were significantly and positively correlated with the adoption behavior of the respondents while age, cosmopolitans and extension contact had no any significant relationship.

Objectives:

To determine the relationship of livestock technology adoption of the farmers with their six selected characteristics.

Methodology:

Mushuddi Union of Madhupur thana of Tangail district was purposively selected as study area. The study area consists of nine villages and out of these nine villages four villages were selected following simple random sampling technique. A list of 791 farmers who possessed livestock and poultry birds was prepared. Out of 791 farmers 16.56 percent of them were randomly selected for proportionate sampling. Thus 131 farmers consituted the sample for the study. The sample was drawn by using a table of random numbers (Fisher and Yates, 1963). A structured interview schedule was prepared keeping the objectives in mind. The interview schedule was piloted with the help of five farmers of the study area. Necessary alterations and adjustments were made and final version of schedule was then prepared. Collection of data was done in two stages- firstly, it was started on 20 July to 22 August 1994 and secondly, 6 October to 30 October 1994.Adoption of livestock technology (which includes vaccination of poultry; vaccination of cattle; vaccination of goats; modern veterinary treatment and artificial insemination of cow_ was considered as dependent variable. whereas the selected characteristics (viz. age; education; family size; farm size; cosmopoliteness and extension contact) of the farmers were taken as independent variables for this study.

Achievement/Findings:

From the present study it has been revealed that education is highly and positively correlated with the adoption behaviour of the respondent. In order to expand the rate of adoption of such a noble enterprise, there should have been educational programme or adult literacy programme in order to increase awareness for making the people become innovative. The present study does not show any significant relationship between the cosmopoliteness and extension contact of the respondents with the adoption behaviour of the respondents. The person having more cosmopolite and more exposure with the extension agents are supposed to be more innovative, but perhaps as the enterprise needs some extra money to adopt it made the respondents reluctant.
