A study was undertaken to evaluate effectiveness of foliar spray with nine different plant extracts viz. Tagetus patuld. Lycopersicon esculentum, Polyath longifilid, Achras sapota, Datura metel, Azadirachta indica, Allium satvam, Allium cepa and Cymbopogom citractes and Trichoderma based preparation BAU-Biofungicide against leaf spot (tikka) of groundnut caused by Cercospora arachidicola and Cercosporidium personatum in the research field of Bangladesh Agriculturul University, Mymensingh. Bavistin was included in the experiment as check and spray of plain water represented control. Almost all treatments gave considerable reduction in disease incidence and increase in growth parameters, pod and haulm yield compared to control. The most effective materials were Bavistin 50 WP (Carbendazim), BAU-Biofungicide, leaf extract of A. indica, L. esculentum and D. metel. The materials decreased lesions number leaf-1, defoliation plant-1, incidence of leaf spot and number of infected leaf plant-1 by 13.3-36.617.1-43.1, 22.2-48.7 and 26.6 to 39.0 % and increased pod yield and haulm yield by 1.94-40.11 and 8.15-56.01 %, respectively. Three materials such as D. metel, A. indica and Trichoderma based preparation BAU-Biofungicide may be recommended against the disease instate of chemical fungicide Bavistin

To evaluate effectiveness of foliar spray with nine different plant extracts.

Water extract of nine plant materials were tested in the field experiment against leaf spot of groundnut. They were extracts, fresh leaves of Polyath longifilid @ (20%) (w/v), Lycopersicon esculentum (20%), Tagetus patuld (25%), Achras sapota (20%), Datura metel (20%), Azadirachta indica (25%), Allium satvam (25%) and (Allium cepa (25%), Cymbopogom citractes (50%). BAU-Biofungicide (Trichodema based preparation) (2.5%) and Bavision 50 WP (Carbendazim) (0.1%) were included in the experiment as check. Plain water (spray check) was used as absolute control. All the test materials were applied as foliar spray. The spray was stated from 65 days after sowing and continued for 5 times at 20 days before harvest. The experiment was carried out in the Research field of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 2009 to May 2010.  The field was prepared following standard procedures. The experiment was laid out following randomized complete block design with three replications, maintaining 3.0 m x 1.2 m unit plot, 1.5 m block to block and 1.0 m plot to plot distances. The seeds of groundnut (variety Dhaka-1) were sown on November 27, 2009 in the line about 2-3 cm depth. The seed rate was 110 kg ha-1. Seed to seed and line to line distances were 10 cm and 40 cm, respectively. Fertilizers were applied @ 10-50-80-30-2 kg ha-1 of N-P-K-S-B in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MoP), gypsum and boric acid, respectively (DAE, 1985). Cow dung was applied @ 10 t ha-1. Half of urea, the entire amount of other fertilizers and manure were applied to the field at the time of final land preparation. The remaining amount of urea was applied as top dress at 55 days after sowing. Irrigation, weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Five sprays each of fungicide, plant extracts and BAU-Biofungicide were given at 15 days interval with the help of a self compressed hand sprayer to cover the foliage parts of plants from 65 days after sowing till 20 days before harvest.Data on plant height, number of total, infected and defoliated leaves plant-1, number of lesions leaf-1 and disease incidence (% infected leaves plant-1) were recorded.Incidence of leaf spot (%) was calculated following the formula stated below (Subrahmayam et al. 1995).Disease incidence(%)=Number of infected leaves/plants/Total number of leaves per plantsx100.Plants were harvested 168 days after sowing on May 27, 2010. The data were recorded on number and weight of total, mature pods, seeds plant-1, seeds 100 pods-1, yield and dry haulm weight of groundnut. In addition to that yield and dry haulm loss were assessed. The percentage yield loss was calculated on the basis of the formula which was given below:Yield loss= Pod yieldof treated plot- Pod yield of untreated plot (Control)/ Pod yield of untreated polt( Control)x100 All data were analyzed statistically following MSTAT- C computer program.

Based on the findings of the present study it may be concluded that leaf extract of A. indica, D. metel and BAU-Biofungicide can successfully be used for eco-friendly management of leaf spot or tikka disease of groundnut with higher yield by avoiding fungicidal chemical as an important alternative to the hazardous chemical fungicides.
