A field experiment was conducted at the Crop Botany Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 2012 to April 2013 to study the effect of variety and different doses of nitrogen on growth and yield of grain sorghum. It was a two factorial experiment. Factor one consisted of four levels of N viz. 0, 60, 80 and 100 kg ha-1 and factor two consisted of four varieties of grain sorghum viz. Safal 999, Jamboo, Hybrid Sudan and Hybrid Sorgo. The experiment was laid out following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental results revealed that both variety and different N levels had a significant effect on all of the morphological characters like plant height, leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TDM) plant-1, crop growth rate (CGR) and yield contributing characters like 1000 grains weight, grain yield, harvest index (HI) at harvesting stage. The highest value of plant height (281.91 cm), LAI (5.89) and CGR at 91-120 (14.10 g m-2 day-1) was produced by Jamboo. The highest value of TDM (237.80 g) plant-1 and yield (4.60 t ha-1) was produced by Hybrid Sorgo. The highest value of 1000 grains weight (33.32 g) and HI (41.27%) was produced by Hybrid Sudan. With the increasing doses of N there was an increase in all the characters. The maximum values of plant height (222.54 cm), LAI (5.77), TDM plant-1 (205.50 g) were obtained from the plots fertilized with 100 kg N ha-1, whereas the plots fertilized with 80 kg N ha-1 found beneficial to maximize the values of 1000 grain weight (30.97 g) and yield (4.67 t ha-1). Among the varieties tested Jamboo was the best in terms of morphological characters with 100 kg N ha-1 whereas variety Hybrid Sorgo showed best performance with 80 kg N ha-1 in terms of yield and yield contributing characters.

To study the effect of variety and different doses of nitrogen on growth and yield of grain sorghum

The experiment was conducted at the Crop Botany Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period from December 2012 to April 2013. The experimental site belongs to the Agro-ecological zones of the Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain (AEZ 9) having dark grey non-calcareous soil (UNDP and FAO, 1988). The soil belongs to Sonatola Series of the Old Brahmaputra alluvial tract. The soil was silt loam in texture having the pH 6.8, Organic Carbon 1.26%, Total N 0.08%, Available P 19 ppm, exchangeable K 0.5 c mol kg-1, available Sulphur 18.10 ppm. It was a two factorial experiment. Factor one consisted of four levels of nitrogen viz. There were three blocks in the experiment. Each block was divided into 16 unit plots where the treatment combinations were allocated at random. There were altogether 48 plots in this experiment. The area of each plot was 4 m2 (2m × 2m). The recommended fertilizer rate of sorghum is TSP 65.6 kg ha-1, MOP 50.45 kg ha-1 and Gypsum 110.75 kg ha-1. The total amount of TSP, MOP and Gypsum and one third Urea (of the treatments) was applied during the final plot preparation and the rest Urea was top dressed in equal splits at 25 DAS and 45 DAS. According to the treatment of the experiment four different doses of N was applied @ 0 g plot?1, 52.17 g plot?1, 69.57 g plot?1 and 86.96 g plot?1 in the form of urea. All the fertilizer was incorporated in the top most soil within 15 cm of the soil. The initial soil chemical analyses were done according the standard methods of analysis (Page et. al. 1982). Weeding was done at 25 and 45 DAS. Gap filling was done at 7 DAS. The only source of irrigation was natural precipitation. Experimental data were recorded on four randomly selected plants from each plot. The selected plants were collected and necessary information was recorded accordingly. Grain and straw yields were recorded plot wise on oven dry basis. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean difference were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using the statistical computer package program MSTAT-C (Gomez and Gomez, 1984.

The effect of variety on plant height was significant. The tallest plant (281.91 cm) was observed in Jamboo. On the other hand, the shortest plant (147.06 cm) was founded in Safal 999 . Variation in plant height among the varieties may be due to genetic makeup. This varietal result was in agreement with the findings of Ghasemi et al. (2012) who found significant difference in plant height of different sorghum varieties due to their genetic makeup.
