Flushing Pattern and Leaf Composition of BTRI Clones

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Leaf composition and flushing pattern of clones namely BT1, BT2 and BT3 are variable. But the crop distribution percentage of all the clones appeared to be same in the observed cropping season having a peak in August. Flush expressed as the incidence of two leaves and a bud was found best in BT3 followed by BT2 and BT1. BT2 produced least numbers of banji. Results indicated that these trials are controlled synergistically by environmental and genetical factors.

Objectives:

To study the leaf composition and flushing pattern of BTRI clones

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out from early May to November, 1979 at Biascherra Experimenta Farm under the same agro-climatic situations. Nine year old clones BT1, BT2 and BT3 were used in 5 repications and one clonal plant was randomly selected from each replication in order to determine the crop distribution pattern and the physical leaf composition viz. two and a bud, three and a bud, banji etc. Crop distribution percentage was expressed as percentage of yield per plant. Leaves were plucked at weekly interval throughout the observation period.

Achievement/Findings:

A little variation, a similar trend of crop distribution from May to November was observed in all the cones. The crop peak reached in August. Influence of season has got the same effect on the whole crop situation. In all the clones the enhanced growth in August might be attributed to the faster development of vascular tissue which possibly be influenced or favoured by climatic condition. while a large number of banji shoots were observed during November suggesting that the development of vascular tissue has been slowing down and consequently producing less cropping unit. The physical leaf composition expressed in terms of two leaves and a bud, three leaves and a bud and bunji almost followed a common pattern commensurate with the seasonal variation. The incidence of two leaves and a bud was found highest in BT3 followed by BT2 and BT1. Further BT2 produced least numbers of banji than the other clones under the same agro-climatic condition. These observed variations between clones in their flushing pattern and leaf composition could be due to synchronization of shoot growth or either to unequal phyllochron or to unequal plastochron.
