Length–weight and Length–length Relationships of Five Threatened Fish Species from the Jamuna (brahmaputra River Tributary) River, Northern Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The small indigenous species, namely Ailiichthys punctata, Botia lohachata, Chanda nama, Laubuca laubuca and Mystus cavasius, comprise an important component of riverine fisheries of Bangladesh. This study describes the length–weight relationships (LWRs) and length– length relationships (LLRs) of five threatened fishes from the Jamuna River, a distributary of the Brahmaputra River in northern Bangladesh. A total of 919 specimens from five species in five families used for this study were caught by traditional fishing gear, March 2010 through February 2011. The allometric coefficient (b) of the LWRs indicated negative allometric growth in A. punctata, B. lohachata, and C. nama (b < 3.00), but positive allometric growth in L. laubuca and M. cavasius (b > 3.00). Furthermore, the LLRs were highly correlated (r² > 0.978; P < 0.001). This study presents the first reference on LWRs and LLRs for these threatened species in Bangladesh. The results would be useful for sustainable management and conservation of the limited stocks in the Brahmaputra River ecosystem.

Objectives:

To provide the reference of LWRs and LLRs of the A. punctata, B. lohachata, C. nama, L. laubuca, and M. cavasius threatened fish populations from the Jamuna River, northern Bangladesh.

Methodology:

This study was conducted in the Jamuna River (Sariakandi, Bogra region: 24⁰88'N; 89⁰57'E) of Bangladesh. The Jamuna is the main tributary to the Brahmaputra River, Bangladesh, and is one of the worlds largest rivers, ranking among the top three rivers in terms of sediment and water discharge volume. Samples were collected on a seasonal basis from commercial catches landed at the Sariakandi fish landing center of the Bogra region, March 2010 to February 2011. The main gear used by commercial fishers includes the traditional jhaki jal (cast net), tar jal (square lift net), and dughair (conical trap). The fresh samples were immediately chilled in ice on site and fixed with 10% buffered formalin upon arrival at the laboratory. All morphometric measurements were taken. The fixed specimens were individually measured and weighed. Total length (TL), fork length (FL), and standard length (SL) were measured to the nearest 0.01 cm using digital slide calipers (Mitutoyo, CD-15PS; Mitutoyo Corporation, Tokyo, Japan); total body weight (BW) was measured using an electronic balance (Shimadzu, EB-430DW; Shimadzu Seisakusho, Tokyo, Japan) with 0.01 g accuracy. The relationship between length and weight was calculated using the expression: W = aL^b, where W is the total body weight (BW, g), L the total length (TL, cm), a the intercept of the regression and b the slope or regression coefficient. Parameters a and b of the weight–length relationship were estimated by linear regression analysis based on natural logarithms: ln(W) = ln(a) + b ln(L). Prior to the regression analysis of ln BW on ln TL, ln-ln plots of length and weight values were performed for visual inspection of outliers, with extremes being excluded from the regression analyses. Furthermore, SL vs TL; SL vs FL; and TL vs FL relationships were estimated by linear regression. Statistical analyses were performed using GRAPHPAD PRISM 5 software (GraphPad Software, Inc., San Diego, CA). Parameters a and b of the LWR among species were compared by the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). All statistical analyses were considered significant at 5% (P < 0.05).

Achievement/Findings:

This study provides an important baseline study on the LWRs and LLRs of five threatened fishes from Bangladesh. These results can be an effective tool for fishery biologists, managers and conservationists to initiate early management strategies and regulations for conservation of the remaining stocks of the endangered species in the Jamuna River. Additionally, this study provides valuable information for the online FishBase database, as well as providing an important baseline for future studies within the Brahmaputra River and surrounding ecosystems.
