Effect of Grafting Time and Keeping Condition of Grafts on Success, Survivability of Pummelo

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of time and keeping condition on growth, success and survivability of pummel grafts. The experiment was conducted at the Germplasm Centre (GPC) of Fruit Tree improvement Program (FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from August, 2010 to May, 2011. The experiment composed of two factors, such as (i) seven dates of grafting operation starting from August, 2010 to February, 2011 and (ii) keeping condition of grafts viz., open condition (C₁) and poly house condition (C₂). A wide variation was found among the treated grafts with respect to different parameters such as grafting success and survivability, days required to bud break, increase rate of new scion shoot, graft height and canopy volume due to the influence of the factors. The August grafted plants require the minimum time to bud break (23.63 days) and showed the highest success (88.07%), survivability (83.06%), graft height (48.66 cm), length of scion (24.42 cm) while the measurement of the aforementioned parameters were the lowest for January grafted plants except the days required to bud break, first leaf flushing and first leaf opening. Similarly, keeping conditions of grafts following poly house condition (C₂) gave the best results in respect of success (74.08%), survivability (72.52%), days required to bud break (27.87 days), graft height (30.54 cm), length of scion (21.47) while open condition (C₁) performed the worst.

Objectives:

To study the effect of time and keeping condition on growth, success and survivability of pummel grafts.

Methodology:

The present experiment was conducted at the "Germplasm Centre" (GPC) of fruit tree improvement program (FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from August, 2010 to February, 2011. The experiments compiled of two factor such as growing condition vis. (C₁) Open condition and (C₂) Poly house condition and Seven dates of grafting operations viz.. T₁= 11th August, 2010; T₂= 11th September, 2010; T₃= 11th October, 2010; T₄= 11th November, 2010; T₅= 11th December, 2010, T₆=11th January, 2011; T₇= 11th February, 2011. The two-factor experiment consisting of 14 treatment combinations was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. For each treatment combination grafting operations were performed on twenty rootstocks of each plot of a block so total number of grafts 420 (7×2×3×20) were made.
