Serological Study of Edwardsiella Tarda Isolates Recovered from Thai Pangas Cultured in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 17 isolates of Edwardsiella tarda were selected from the laboratory stock of E. tarda previously collected from Thai Pangas Pangasius hypopthaiamus for their serological characterization. At first conventional biochemical tests together with the test by API 20E strip were performed. All the isolates gave same characteristics of E. tarda. The serological tests were carried out by slide agglutination with anti E. tarda NUF251 type A rabbit serum collected from Japan. None of them agglutinated. It was proved that the isolates of Bangladesh were serologically different from those of Japan, at least E. tarda NUF251, serotype A.

Objectives:

To investigate the serological character of E. tarda previously isolated from P. hypopthalamus in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Edwardsiella tarda isolates were selected for this experiment from laboratory stock and stocked on triptic soya agar (TSA) slant culture in the Disease Laboratory of Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. These were isolated from Pangasius suichi and its stock pond situated in the Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University campus, Mymensingh. The recovered isolates were selected on the basis of their collection from different organs of the host body (P. suichi) and pond environment (pond water and sediment). Sources of selected isolates are mentioned.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that the isolates showed the same morphological and biochemical characters. The standard API 20E was done for one isolate to compare the results of the conventional biochemical test. As the API 20E strips are very much expensive, only one strip was used to characterize a representative isolate. It was found that the conventional test results coincided with the API 20E test results. The recovered isolates were selected on the basis of their collection from different organs of the host body (P. suichi) and pond environment (pond water and sediment). Sources of selected isolates are mentioned.
