Reaction of Some Rice Cultivars to False Smut in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty two rice cultivars were assayed for their reaction to False smut of under natural conditions following randomized complete block design (RCBD). The healthy seedlings were transplanted in the field and exposed to natural infection of false smut of rice. To encourage infection, no fungicide was sprayed in the field. The infected grains were surrounded by velvety mass of chlamydospore balls which were orange yellow at early stage and turned dark green black during maturity. The causal organism was identified as Ustilaginoidiea virens. The incidence was different in various cultivars. The highest number of infected hills (%), infected panicles (%), infected grains per panicle were recorded in BRRI Dhan 49 and BRRI Dhan 52. The highest numbers of spore ball per panicle was recorded in BRRI Dhan 49 and BINA Dhan12. Other varieties like BR 23, BR 10 and BRRI Dhan 46 were free from False smut. BRRI Dhan 49 was highly susceptible to false smut. BR 23, BR 10 and BRRI 46 were resistant.

Objectives:

To examine the reaction of some Bangladeshi rice cultivars to false smut disease under natural conditions.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the Aman season (July-December) of 2013. The land is medium high, belonging to the Agro-ecological Zone -9 (AEZ-9), Old Bramaputra Floodplain. The soil is silty loam in texture and the reaction of the soil is slightly acidic.The land was prepared thoroughly by successive ploughing and cross ploughing. All kinds of weed, stubbles and crop residue were removed from the field and leveled by laddering. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Bock Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The field was divided into 3 blocks. Each block was divided into 22 unit plots. Size of each unit plot was 4m x 5 m. Plots were separated from each other by band of 0.5 m width and the blocks separated by a drain of 1m width. The soil of each plot was puddled. Cultivars were randomly assigned in each block. Bashi raj, Pajam, Nazirshail, BR 3, BR 10, BR 11, BR 22, BR 23, BRRI Dhan 31, BRRI Dhan 32, BRRI Dhan 34, BRRI Dhan 38, BRRI Dhan 39, BRRI Dhan 41, BRRI Dhan 46, BRRI Dhan 49, BRRI Dhan 51, BRRI Dhan 52, BRRI Dhan 62, BINA 7, BINA 8 and BINA 12 were used in the study. The seedlings were carefully uprooted from the seedbed. Thirty days old healthy seedlings were transplanted in the unit plots on the 27^th July 2013. Plant spacing was 25 cm x 15 cm and 2-3 seedlings were transplanted per hill. Intercultural operations were done as one when necessary. Number of infected hills/plot, number of hills/plot, number of infected panicles/plot, number of infected grains/panicle and number of spore balls/panicle were recorded from each plot. Data were subjected to statistical analysis by using MSTAT programme following the principles of RCBD. The significance of difference were calculated by the use of DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

From the study it can be concluded that some high yielding varieties such as BR 10, BR 23 and BRRI Dhan 46 are resistant to False smut but most HYVs and local cultivars are not resistant to this disease. Further study of resistance of the HYVs need to be assessed under force inoculation of false smut disease.
