Effect of Wrapping System and Time of Grafting on the Success and Survivability of Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present experiment was conducted at the BAU- germplasm Centre (GPC) of the Fruit Tree Improvement Program (FTIP), Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from April, 2011 to August, 2011 to investigate the effect of wrapping system and time of operation on the success and survivability of cleft grafting of mango (cv. Amrapali). The experiment consisted of two factors, such as (i) three wrapping systems viz. fully wrapping the scion by polythene strip, wrapping the scion with polythene strip except tip and wrapping with polycap and (ii) fourteen time of grafting operations viz. 4^th April, 14^thApril, 24^th April, 4^th May, 14^th May, 24^th May, 4^th June, 14^th June, 24^th June, 4^th July, 14^th July, 24^th July, 4^th August, and 14^thAugust. Wide variations were found among the grafts in respect of graft success and survivability due to the influence of the factors. Almost all the treatments showed significant effect on parameters. In case of wrapping system, highest graft success (63.03%) and survivability (62.22%) were achieved under wrapping with polycap. In case of time of grafting operation highest number of graft success (79.18%) and survivability (76.03%) were achieved in 14^th June. The combined effect of the above two factors had also significant influence on almost all the parameters studied. The highest graft success (82.04%) and survivability (80.88%) were required by the grafts of 14^th June operation and wrapping with polycap. Grafting operation done in 14^th June and wrapping with polycap was found to be the most suitable for the highest graft success and survivability.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of wrapping system and time of operation on the success and survivability of cleft grafting of mango (cv. Amrapali).

Methodology:

The present experiment was conducted at the BAU- germplasm Centre (GPC) of the Fruit Tree Improvement Program (FTIP), Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. This chapter deals with the materials used and methodology followed in conducting the experiment. The two-factor experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The present experiment included two factors factor A and factor B. Factor A: Wrapping system i) Fully wrapping the scion with polythene strip ii) Wrapping the scion with polythene strip except tip iii) Wrapping the scion with polycap. Factor B: Time of grafting operation- Fourteen dates of grafting were considered viz. T₁= Grafting on 4th April, 2011; T₂= Grafting on 14th April, 2011; T₃= Grafting on 24th April, 2011; T₄= Grafting on 4th May, 2011; T₅= Grafting on 14th May, 2011; T₆= Grafting on 24th May, 2011; T₇= Grafting on 4th June, 2011 T₈= Grafting on 14th June, 2011; T₉= Grafting on 24th June, 2011; T₁₀= Grafting on 4th July, 2011; T₁₁= Grafting on 14th July, 2011; T₁₂= Grafting on 24th July, 2011; T₁₃= Grafting on 4th August, 2011; T₁₄= Grafting on 14th August, 2011. The data were recorded at one month interval in respect of times required for percentage of graft success and percentage of graft survivability. The collected data on the different parameters of study were statistically analyzed to find out the significance of differences between the treatments and treatment combinations. The means of all the treatments were calculated and the analyses of variances (ANOVA) for all the characters were performed by ‘F’ variance test. The significance of differences between treatment means was compared by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be inferred from the present study that cleft grafting operation in 14^th June was found to be most suitable for the highest graft success and survivability under wrapping with polycap for Amrapali. It may also be said that grafting operation in mango can be performed with more than 80% success and survivability of grafts.
