The present experiment was carried out at the USDA-ARS Allium-Carrot project Field Laboratory of Horticulture Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October, 2012 to November, 2013 to examine the effects of Phosphorus (P0=0 g/m2, P1=15 g/m2, P2=20 g/m2, P3=25 g/m2) and Potassium (K0=0 g/m2, K1=20 g/m2, K2=30 g/m2, K3=40 g/m2) fertilizers on the seed production of two varieties of carrot viz. BA (BrasilliaAgroflora), and PA (Prima Agroflora). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Fertilizers had significant effect on most of the parameters studied. The phosphorus P3 (25g/m2) gave the highest seed yields (21.05 g/plant and 3368.8 kg/ha) and the lowest (15.06 g/plant and 2409.6 kg/ha) were in control (P0=0g/m2). Also the highest plant height (114.27 cm) was observed from P3 (25 g/m2) and the lowest (100.20 cm) was from control (P0 =0 g/m2) fertilizer application. The potassium treatments showed significant influence on most of the parameters. The maximum yields (19.05 g/plant and 3048.8 kg/ha) were obtained from K3 (40g/m2) fertilizer application and the highest plant height (110.35cm) was also observed from it. Between the varieties PA gave higher yields (18.30 g/plant and 2929.4 kg/ha) and higher plant height (105 cm) was also observed from this variety. Considering the combined effect of Phosphorus, Potassium and variety the maximum seed yields (26.77 g/plant and 4283.2 kg/ha) were obtained from the treatment combination of the variety PA with P3 and K3 (25g/m2 + 40g/m2) followed by the next highest (25.59 g/plant and 4094.4 kg/ha) recorded from the combination of variety BrasilliaAgroflora (BA) with P3 (25g/m2) phosphorus and K0 (0g/m2) potassium fertilizer doses. The highest plant height (121.83 cm) was observed from the combined effect of PA with P3 (25 g/m2) and K3 (40 g/m2) followed by the next highest (119 cm) recorded from BA with P3 (25 g/m2) and K0 (0 g/m2) fertilizer doses. Sequential germination test of both PA and BA varieties showed that the percentage of germination was decreased with the passing of time from harvesting to next seed sowing time. Considering the combined effect the variety (PA) with Phosphorus (25g/m2) and Potassium (40g/m2) showed the highest seed yield under the field condition of BAU campus.

To examine the effects of Phosphorus (P0=0 g/m2, P1=15 g/m2, P2=20 g/m2, P3=25 g/m2) and Potassium (K0=0 g/m2, K1=20 g/m2, K2=30 g/m2, K3=40 g/m2) fertilizers on the seed production of two varieties of carrot viz. BA (BrasilliaAgroflora), and PA (Prima Agroflora).

The present research work was conducted at the USDA-ARS Allium-Carrot Project, Field Laboratory of Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October, 2012 to November, 2013. The soil was sandy loam in texture with a pH of 6.7. The total quantity of cowdung(10 tons/ha) was applied during seed bed preparation. The seeds were soaked in water for 24 hours and the soaked seeds were sown uniformly in the finally prepared land on 22 October, 2012 in rows and covered with loose soil to help the quick germination of seed. Half of the recommended quantity of urea(100 kg/ha), total quantity of TSP (105 kg/ha) and half of MOP (175 kg/ha) were applied as top dressing after 30 days and the remaining halves of urea and MOP after 45 days of seed sowing(Rashid 1983).Thinning,weeding, mulching, staking, irrigation and plant protection measure were done as and when needed. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. There were 32 treatment combinations with four levels of Phosphorus (P0= 0 g/m2, P1= 15 g/m2, P2= 20 g/m2, P3= 25 g/m2) and Potassium (K0= 0 g/m2, K1= 20 g/m2, K2= 30 g/m2, K3= 40 g/m2) with two varieties BA (BrassiliaAgroflora) and PA (Prima Agroflora). Total amount of recommended dose of Phosphorus and Potassium fertilizers are applied during land preparation. Total quantity of cowdung was applied during land preparation. The prepared stecklings of carrot were transplanted on 6 January, 2013 maintaining a spacing of 25 cm× 25 cm between the rows and stecklings respectively. A little portion of the root was kept above the ground level at the time of transplanting. The transplanting was done in the afternoon. Weeding, mulching, staking, irrigation measures were done as and when needed. Mature seed umbels were harvested at different dates by picking according to maturity of umbel in different treatments. Harvesting started from 23rd April and continued up to 30thMay, 2013.Primary and secondary umbels of each plant were harvested separately for each treatment. To determine the percentage of germination, a sample of 50 seeds was taken from each treatment. The germination test was done in Petridishes, following usual procedure in the P. G. laboratory of the department of Horticulture. The germinated seeds were counted on the seventh day to find out the percentage of germination. This germination percentage was done sequentially in the laboratory. Germination percentage data were recorded from the months of July to next sowing month November, 2013.

The highest yield of seeds of primary umbel (14.73 g) was obtained from the plants that received P3 (25 g/m2) fertilizer and the lowest yield (9.83 g) was found from no Phosphorus (P0) fertilizer treatment. The highest yield of seeds of secondary umbel (6.21 g) was obtained from P3 (25 g/m2) fertilizer and the lowest yield (5.23 g) in plants that received no Phosphorus (P0) fertilizer treatment. The highest yield (21.05 g) per plant was found with P3 (25 g/m2) fertilizer dose and the lowest yield (15.06 g) was with the treatment without Phosphorus (P0) fertilizer. The highest seed yield per plot (336.88 g) was obtained from P3 (25 g/m2) fertilizer dose and the lowest seed yield (241.1 g) was obtained from no Phosphorus (P0) fertilizer treatment. The highest seed yield per hectare (3368.8 kg) was found with P3 (25 g/m2) fertilizer treatment while it was the lowest (2411 kg) with the treatment of no Phosphorus (P0) fertilizer. The highest germination percentage (89.50%) was obtained from the treatment of P3 (25 g/m2) fertilizer dose and the lowest germination percentage (83.91%) was found with the treatment of no Phosphorus (P0) fertilizer application.
