A 96 days study was conducted on the culture of dhela, Osteobrama cotio in combination with mola, Amblyplzaryngodon mola and Cyprinus carpio in 12 experimental rice plots. Four treatments each having three replicates containing O. cotio and A. mola. in T1, O. cotio cotio and Cyprinus carpio in T2 with O. cotio cotio, A. mola and C. carpio in T3 and T4 was kept as control without fish. The values of water quality parameters uiz., water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorophyll-a, nitrate-nitrogen, phosphate- phosphorus were within suitable range for fish culture. Between the two Small Indigenous Species (SIS) of fish O. cotio cotio showed better growth and survival rate. Whereas C. carpio showed the highest growth and survival rate among the three species. Among the three treatments the highest yield (523.16 kg/ha) of fish was obtained in T2 with O. cotio cotio and C. carpio and very low yield (13.39 kg/ha) was recorded in T1 with O. cotio cotio and A. mola. Considering the growth and survival, O. cotio cotio was found more suitable than A. Mola between the two SIS of fish for rice fish culture.

To determine the cultural suitability of O. cotio cotio with other species in rice fish culture and their effects on rice production.

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The area of each plot is 3.5 decimal i.e. 140 m2. Rain water and irrigated water from the farm deep tube-well were the sources of water supply to the experimental plots during the study period. Small water channels (0.8 m Width and 0.4 m depth) were made between the plots to supply water to them. Embankment (0.7 m height and 0.5 m width) surrounded the experimental area, which have made the plots free from flood. The area of ditches for each plot was 1.5m2 depth. The plots were ploughed and leveled properly. The fertilizers such as urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), murate of potash (MP) and gypsum were applied. BR-2 rice was selected for this experiment which is hardy and resistant to diseases and pests. The rice seedlings were transplanted in alternate row spacing of 35 cm + 15 cm. The plant to plant distance given was 15 cm. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design (RBD) with four treatments viz., T1, T2, T3 and T4. Each treatment was provided with three replications viz., R1, R2, and R3, In treatment-1 (T1) 10,000/ha O. cotio cotio and 10,000/ha A. mola were stocked in each plot and in treatment-2 (T2) O. cotio cotio and C. carpio were stocked at the rate of 10,000/ha and 5,000/ha respectively in each plot. But in treatment-3 (T3) O. cotio coiio, A. mola and C. carpio were stocked in each plot at the rate of 6,000/ha, 6,000/ha and 3,000/ha respectively. The treatment-4 (T4.) was kept as control without stocking apy fish in the rice plots. No pesticide was applied to the crop and no supplementary feed was provided to fish. Only water supply was done to maintain required water depth in the fields for the proper growth of fish. The physico-chemical parameters of water such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorophyll-a, nitrate-nitrogen, phosphate-phosphorus in the rice fields were determined fortnightly. The rice was harvested at maturity i.e. 112 days after transplanting for recording the grain and straw yields. The representative samples of rice plant were taken from each plot comprising an area of 1m2 randomly. The plants were then threshed with a pedeI thresher to separate grain from straw. The weight of grain and straw obtained were then converted to yield per hectare (mt/ha) immediately after harvesting the rice, the fishes were harvest from each plot by draining out the water with the help of shallow pump. After draining out water the fishes were collected, counted and recorded and species-wise and plot-wise separately. The total length and weight of 20 fishes of each species were taken randomly from each plot to determine the survival rate, growth and yield of fish.

Considering the growth and production, it may be concluded that O. cotio cotio was found more suitable species for rice-fish culture with C. carpio than with A. mala. Therefore, O. cotio cotio as SIS fish in our country may be recommended for rice fish culture in combination with other species like C. carpio
