Economic Traits of Deshi Males with Isabrown Females Under Farm and Rural Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted to observe the Live weight and live weight gain, age and weight at sexual maturity and mortality of the crossbreds of Naked neck Deshi G x Isabrown E and full feathered DeshiG x IsabrownE raised in both farm and rural conditions. The Live weight of the chicks were recorded at hatch and their subsequent bi-weekly live weight were recorded upto the age at sexual maturity and the mortality were recorded when occurred during the experimental periods. The Live weight of the chicks in the crossbreds increased proportionately at different stages of age. The maximum Live weight gain was achieved during 10-18 weeks of age. The live weight of the two genotypes in farm condition was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that of rural condition. The live weight gain of both sexes upto 8 weeks were almost similar but in later weeks (upto sexual maturity) the male grew faster than the female. In both genotypes and farming conditions, the females attained Late sexual maturity (158.53 ± 2.76 days). The Naked neck DeshiG x IsabrownE and full feathered DeshiG x IsabrownE attained sexual maturity at 148.59 ± 2.16 days and 155.35 ± 3.87 days respectively. In both farming conditions age at sexual maturity was more or less same. The live weight at sexual maturity was higher in males. The mortality was lowest in Naked neck DeshiG x IsabrownE (12.50%) in farm condition and highest (42.85%) in rural condition. The mortality full feathered DeshiG x Isabrown E were 22.20% and 30% respectively in farm and rural conditions

Objectives:

i) to study the live weight and live weight gain of the crossbreds

ii) to study the age and weight at sexual maturity of the crossbreds and

iii) to study the mortality of these crossbred chicks.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Poultry Farm and at Bayra, a village adjacent to the University campus for a period from July 1994 to April 1995. Isabrown birds were procured from a commercial poultry farm at Dhaka and the Deshi males were procured from the local markets. After purchase the birds were quarantined for 15 days. The male birds were Naked neck Deshi and full feathered Deshi. They were distributed in pens at the ratio of 1 male: 5 females. At farms, pen-I contained Naked neck Deshi x Isabrown and pen-2 contained full feathered Deshi x with Isabrown. The same crosses were maintained in the rural condition.

From pen-1, eggs were collected and hatched by rice husk incubator. All the hatched out chicks were brooded upto 4th weeks of age. The live weight of the chicks were recorded at hatch and at bi-weekly interval upto the age at sexual maturity. Age at sexual maturity were also recorded. From pen-2, eggs were collected for hatching but no fertile eggs could be obtained. To get fertile eggs out of this cross, the Isbrown hens were inseminated artificially with the semen of normal full feathered Deshi males. Semen was collected from the males at morning in a test tube by massage method. After collection, the semen of each male was immediately put into the vent of the females with the help of a dropper. Then the eggs were collected and hatched by the electric incubator. The chicks were brooded under farm condition upto 4th weeks. Live weight of the chicks at hatch and at bi-weekly interval upto sexual maturity were recorded. The age at sexual maturity were also recorded. The same procedures as practised in farms were followed for birds of both groups in the rural area too.

All preventive measures were taken for the experimental birds reared in both farm and rural conditions. The farm flock were fed with a ration containing 2600 k-cal/kg energy and 17.85% protein. The birds in rural condition were kept under traditional system of feeding and management as practised by the villagers, they were however, provided with some supplementary diet.

The following parameters were studied: i) Live weight and live weight gain, ii) age and weight at sexual maturity and iii) mortality.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings reveal that live weight of both genotypes was higher in farm condition than that of rural condition. In both genotypes and farming conditions the female attained late sexual maturity than the male but at age at sexual maturity the live weight of males was higher than the females. The mortality of both genotypes was highest in rural condition.
