Availability of Green Grass Under Different Land Type and Land Use Systems in a Haor Village.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out in the haor village Noagaon, the FSES site of the Bangladesh Agricultural University during May 1991 to identify the ditribution of different indigenous grasses grown in the haor area and amount of green biomass and dry matter, and crude protein obtained on the basis of land type and land use systems. Three land types (Kanda and river levee, plain land and Nama) and three land use systems (Fallow, rice crop and other crops) were included in the study. The number of identified grass species were recorded 20, 11 and 12 in fallow land, rice crop land and other crops land, respectively. Cyanodon dactylon, Leersia hexandra, Echinochola crusgallii and Echinochola colonum were commonly found in all types of land. Results revealed that the land type, land use systems and their interactions had significant effect on number of grasses unit^-1 area, weight of fresh green biomass, dry matter and conten of crude protein. The highest number of grasses was noticed in plain land under fallow condition. Biomass production was also the highest in same land type. But the crude protein content was the highest in Kanda and river-levee x Other crop land and the lowest in Plain land x Fallow land.

Objectives:

To see the distribution of indigenous grasses grown, green biomass and dry matter, and content of crude protein according to land type and land use systems in the haor area.

Methodology:

The study was carred out in the haor village Noagaon site of the Farming Systems and Environmental Studies, Bangladesh Agricultural University, a representative of haor area during May 1991. The available grasses were collected according to design viewed in the experiment. Three land types (topography) viz. Kanda and river levee, plain land and Nama, and three land used systems e.g. Fallow, rice crop and other crops were included in the study. The grasses growing in each treatment were identified species-wise and density was counted using a quadrat of one square metre in 10 places at random. The fresh biomass of grasses were determined by the harvest. During counting the density, the total grasses in each quadrat were uprooted, washed and taken their fresh weight. The samples were dried in open sunlight and then dried in oven at 68° C for 72 hours. The oven dry weight of grasses were recorded treatmentwise m^-2 basis. The total nitrogen content of the grass samples were analysed in the Laboratory following Semimicro- Kjeldhal method. The percentages of crude protein were then calculated by multiplying with conversion factor. The data collected on density, fresh weight, oven dry weight and crude protein were analysed statistically following the analysis of variance technique of randomized complete block design with the help of computer package M -stat. The mean differences were adjudged by the Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

It indicated the situation of available grasses found in the haor area and also their protein content. The study will be helpful to plan the development of livestock based farming in the haor area from existing situation and to explore the potentiality in future.
