Reproductive Performances of Different Genetic Group of Cows Under Farm Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Data in three parities of 34 Pabna, 20 Red-Chittagong, 36 Sahiwal Crossbred, 35 Sindhi Cross- bred and 30 Jersey crossbred cows from 1972 to 1988 of Bangladesh Agricultural University Dairy Farm were considered to evaluate service per conception, gestation length, post-partum heat period and calving interval. Number of services per conception ranged from 1.57±0.07 in Pabna to 1.63±0.07 in Sindhi crossbreds. Likewise, gestation length range from 279.1 days in Pabna to 282.3 days in Sindhi crossbreds, post partum heat peirod from 138.8 days in Pabna to 185.0 days in Jersey crossbreds and calving interval from 450.7 days in Pabna to 532.0 days in Jersey crossbreds. Conception rate and gestation length did not differ significantly among the different genetic groups. The traits like post partum heat period and calving interval however differed highly significantly (P<0.01). Amongst the parity differences service per conception and gestation length were not found to be significant. But differences were highly significant for post-partum heat period in the second parity and post-partum heat periods and calving interval in the third parity. The results obtained in this study indicated Pabna and Red-Chittagong to be at least equal to those of the crossbreds and even in some respects they were found to be superior.

Objectives:

i) To compare productive and Reproductive Performances of Pabna, Red Chittagong Sahiwal crossbred, Sindhi crossbred and jersey crossbred considering each as an independent genotype.

ii) To evaluate parity differences of the above types over three parities.

Methodology:

Dairy farm data of Bangladesh Agricultural University from 1972 to 1988 on 155 cows of five genetic groups comprising 34 Pabna, 20 Red-Chittagong, 36 Sahiwal crossbreds 35 Sindhi crossbreds and 30 jersey corssbreds were available for this study. The crossbred cows were obtained by crossing respective purebred sires with nondescript indigenous cows. Pabna and Red-Chittagong cows were bought to the farm from the district of Pabna and Chittagong areas respectively. Cows which had at least three consecutive gestation periods (three parities) were included in this study.

The parameters evaluated and compared were service per conception (SPC), gestation length (GL), post-partum heat period (PPHP) and calving interval (CI). Thus each cow had three periodic records on each of the parameters like service per conception and gestation length and only two such records on each of the parameters like post partum heat period and calving interval.

Service per conception was recorded as the number of services required per conception and other three parameters were in days. Data for analysis were arranged according to different genetic groups ireespective of parity and also on the basis of parity.

Achievement/Findings:

The results obtained in this study showed that all tbe genetic groups used were of equal merit, at least for two such important reproductive traits like Service Per Conception and Gestation Length. For the other two traits Post Pertum Heat Period and Calving Interval (PPHP and CI) the two indigenous genotypes (Pabna and Red-Chittagong) were superior to those of crossbred genotypes.
