The purpose of the research was to determine knowledge of rural women on IPM in vegetable cultivation, and to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the women farmers and their knowledge on IPM in vegetable cultivation. The study was conducted in Hossainpur Upazila under Kishoregonj district. Data was collected through interview schedule from a sample of 102 FFS women farmers, out of 375, during 03 August to 03 September 2003. The selected characteristics of the women farmers- age, education, family size, farm size, training received, annual income, cosmopoliteness, organizational participation contact with extension media and innovativeness constituted an independent variable, while women farmers' knowledge of IPM in vegetable cultivation were the dependent variable. The majority (68 percent) of the respondents had medium knowledge while 17 percent had low and 15 percent high knowledge on IPM in vegetable cultivation. Out of 10 selected characteristics or the respondents, education, farm size, annual income, cosmopoliteness, organizational participation and contact with extension media had positive relationship while age. had a negative relationships with their knowledge on IPM in vegetable cultivation. The rest of the variables namely. family size, training received and innovativeness did not show any relationships with their knowledge on IPM in vegetable cultivation.

1. To develop the capabilities of DAE and NGOs to undertake effective IPM training in initially 122 selected upazila of 40 districts, and

2. To develop a national IPM policy and a national IPM programme framework supported by a medium-term action plan to promote and facilitate expansion of [PM activities nationwide.

The study was conducted in Hossainpur Upzila under Kishoregonj district as one of the selected vegetable IPM Upuzila. Vegetable IPM was first conducted in this upazila as one of the pioneer works of SPPS project. Population of the study are the rural women those who are using IPM in vegetable cultivation. Total numbers of women FFS were 15 and each FFS contained 25 women farmers. Each FFS was divided into 5 groups. Thus 375 rural women of 15 FFS in Hossainpur upazila constituted the population of the study. Out of 375 women farmers those who are involved in vegetable IPM, thirty percent (27%) of the women farmers were selected by simple random sampling method. Thus the sample size of the study was 102. An interview schedule was used to collect data. In this study 10 selected characteristics of the respondents were selected as independent variables, which were: age, education, family size, farm size, training received, annual Income, cosrnopoliteness, organazational participation, contact with extension media and innovativeness. Knowledge on IPM of vegetables was the dependent variable of the study IPM knowledge in vegetable cultivation or a respondent was measured by making the correct responses of 22 of questions in relation to various pest management strategies. The total assigned score of the all the questions was 50. A respondent answering a question correctly obtained the full score while for wrong answer she obtained zero score. There were some answers which were scored in between zero to full score assigned according to the grade of responses obtained. The total score obtained by a respondent was taken as the knowledge score of vegetable IPM of the women farmers. The IPM knowledge in vegetable cultivation score could range from 0 to 50, and 50 indicating very high IPM knowledge in vegetable cultivation.

Knowledge of IPM in an important factor for vegetable cultivation by the rural women. The findings of the study revealed that majority (85 percent) or the rural women had medium to high know ledge on IPM in vegetable cultivation. It may be mainly due to the fact that women farmers received training from DAE on using IPM in vegetable cultivation. At the same time, this training increased rural women farmers' awareness on adverse effects of environmental pollution and health hazards. Knowledge of IPM in vegetable cultivation of the rural women farmers had significant positive relationship with their education, farm size, annual income, cosmopoliteness, organizational participation, while age of the respondents had negative relationship with their knowledge in using IPM in vegetable cultivation. Therefore, it may concluded that it would be a wishful thinking to attain overall success in vegetable IPM introduction among rural women farmers unless steps are taken to increase knowledge among them.
