Effect Planting Time and Shading on the Seed Yield and Quality of Summer Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Sub-station, BARI, Thakurgaon during the rabi season in 2006-07 to find out the optimum planting time and proper shading on the seed yield and quality of summer onion. The highest seed yield (401.67kg/ha) was obtained from 30 October planting while the lowest (309.67kg/ha) was found in 20 October planting. The highest seed yield (361.56 kg/ha) was recorded under 50% shading condition which was statistically similar (353.78kg/ha) with 25% shading while the lowest seed yield (318.00 kg/ha) was in no shading control treatment. In case of combined effect of planting time and shading 30 October planting with 50% shading gave the highest seed yield (431.67 kg/ha) and the lowest (294.00kg/ha) was in 20 October planting with no shading treatment combination.

Objectives:

To the find out the optimum planting time and proper shading on the seed yield and quality of summer onion.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Substation during the rabi season, 2006-07 to find out the optimum of planting time and proper shading on the seed yield and quality of summer onion. Three planting time viz. 20 October, 30 October and 9 November were considered as the first factor and three shading treatment such as no shade, 25% shade and 50% shade were considered as the second factor. The experiments were laid out in the randomized complete block design with three replications. Plantings were done at a spacing of 25cm × 20cm. Treatments were randomly assigned to the unit plot. The unit plot size was 1 m×1m. Distance between block-to-block 1.0 m and plot-to-plot 0.50m was maintained. Manures and fertilizer were applied @ well decomposed cowdung 10 ton, urea 250 kg, triple super phosphate 200kg, muriate of potash 160 kg, ZnSO₄ 20 kg, gypsum 120 kg and borax 10 kg per hectare. The entire amount of cowdung was applied after first ploughing of land.The total amount of triple super phosphate (TSP) and half of the muriate of potash (MoP) were applied during the final land preparation. Total urea and remaining MoP were applied in three installments after 25, 45 and 65 days of planting as top dressing (SRC, 2003). Six times irrigation was done in the field during cropping period. First time irrigation was given by watering can just after emergence of bulbs. The rest of the irrigations were applied by flood method followed by mulching to break the soil crust. Weeding was done as and when necessary. Plant protection was provided by spraying Rovral and Diethene M-45 @ 0.25% to keep the crop free from purple bloch diseases (8 days interval) at the later stage. Emituff 20 SL @ 0.25ml per litre was also sprayed at 40 and 60 days after planting to control onion thrips. Umbels were harvested at brownish color by eye estimation. Umbels were harvested in the morning to prevent shattering of seed. Data were taken different parameters and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

The combined effect of planting time and shading treatment was found insignificant. The seed yield per umbel, per plant and per plot was obtained higher from 50% shading it was obviously identical or at par with 25% shading treatment whereas; no shading treatment produced lower seed yield. This finding agrees higher seed weight from 50% shading while lower was found in no shading treatment. The seed crops grown under shading condition were protected from the adverse climatic conditions during flowering, seed set and maturation. This favorable condition might perhaps led to higher percentage of seed set/umbel resulting in higher seed yield.
