Farmers' Attitude Towards Integrated Plant Nutrition System for Soil Fertility Improvement

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main purpose of this study was to determine altitude or the farmers towards Integrated Plant Nutrition System (IPNS) for soil fertility improvement. Ninety respondents were selected following two-stage proportionate random sampling technique. Data were personally collected by the researcher, compiled and interpreted as per objectives of the study. The study also aimed at explaining the assessment of the present status of IPNS at farmers level and how the attitude of the respondents was improved by adopting IPNS. The findings indicated that most of the respondents were middle aged (66.7%) had primary level of education (61.1%), had small farm size (60%) and a small family size (51.1%). The respondents had medium extension contact (58.9%), medium organizational participation (55.6%) and they had medium cosmopoliteness (71.1%). It was also found that most of the respondents were early adopters (42.2%) on IPNS. The respondents had favorable attitude towards IPNS. Moreover, education, extension contact, cosmopoliteness, innovativeness and balanced fertilizer use had strong and positive relationship with the attitude of the respondents to IPNS.

Objectives:

1. To determine and describe the selected characteristics of farmers.

2. To determine the attitude of the farmers regarding IPNS for increasing soil fertility.

3. To explore the relationship between selected characteristics of the farmers and their attitude towards IPNS for increasing soil fertility.

Methodology:

This study was a descriptive survey research. Kaultia union and Mirzapur union of Sadar Upazila of Guzipur District were selected as the locale of the study. Rice growers of Vaoraid village or Kaultia union and Painshail village of Mirzapur union were the population of the study. Required sample respondents were selected by two-stage proportionate random sampling technique. At first two villages, Painshail and vaoraid were selected randomly from to unions. Total number of farm families in Painshail and Vaoraid were 420 and 332 respectively. 50 farmers from Painshail village and 40 farmers from Vaoraid village were collected as the sample. Thus the total number of respondent farmers were 90. Face to face interviewing by using structured interview schedule was used to collect data and the entire process or data collection took 45 days from March to April, 2004. Farmers' attitude towards IPNS was considered as the dependent variable of this study. Respondent's attitude towards IPNS was measured by asking his opinion upon attitudinal statement. Score 5 was assigned to strongly agree statements, while scores 4, 3, 2 and 1 was assigned for agree, undecided, disagree and strongly disagree statements respectively. In case of negative attitudinal statement, reverse score was assigned to each response. Based on the computed scores the respondents were classified into three categories i.e., undecided attitude (50-60 scores), favourable attitude (66-80 scores) and highly favourable attitude (81-95 scores). The independent variables of this study were farmers age, education, family size, farm size, annual income, cosmopoliteness. organizational participational extension contact, innovativeness and balanced fertilizer use. Age of respondent was measured on the basis or actual length of his life and expressed in years. The education was measured by the number of years of schooling. The family was measured according to number of members living together and sharing their earning. The total land area possessed by the farmer under farm and homestead was the basis for measuring farm size. The yearly income of the respondent from different sources was the annual income of the respondent. Respondent's visit to five different places outside of his own village was the basis of cosmopoliteness measurement. For measuring organizational participation and extension contact of the respondent, a four-point scale was used and appropriate weights were assigned to quantify the variables. To measure the innovativeness, each respondent was asked if and when he had adopted each of this innovations. Each farmer was given a total score consisting of the sum of the scores for the individual innovations. Balanced fertilizer doses was measured by the scores consists of dose sub-score. For dose sub-score weight was given as 1, 2 and 3 for incorrect, nearly correct and correct dose. Necessary tables and categories were used to classify the data considering their nature and distribution. As per the objective of the study, statistical tests like frequency counts, percentage, mean, standard deviation were used for analysis and interpretation of data. Correlation coefficients were used for hypothesis testing and 0.05 and 0.01 level probability was used as the basis for exploring relationship between the concerned variables throughout the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Most of the respondents had medium extension contact, medium cosmopolite and medium organizational participation. These could create a medium impact on IPNS response. The respondents of the study area maintained a favorable to highly favorable attitude towards IPNS. Good extension contact helped them to develop such type of attitude. Most of the farmers maintained contact with the BS, input dealers, visited in demonstration plot frequently and thus they knew various positive impact of IPNS and their attitude were changed towards IPNS. To increase more and more positive altitude it was pertinent to increase more extension contact. The respondents of the study area showed innovator characteristics mainly in respect of innovativeness. This innovator characteristic helped them to change their attitude towards IPNS. Most of the respondents of the study did not use balanced fertilizer dose as they opined that balance fertilizer dose was required for better production and also for maintaining good fertility status of soil. But their economic insolvency, FYM, compost and cowdung shortage were responsible for that.
