Yield Performance, Economic Analysis and Quality of Some Aromatic Rice Varieties as Influenced by Poultry Manure and Inorganic Fertilizer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the the central farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during aman season (July to December, 2010) to study the effect of poultry manure and inorganic fertilizer on the yield and quality of some aromatic rice varieties. Ten treatment combinations consisting of five varieties viz. Kalizira, BR-5, BRRI dhan34, Chinigura and Tulsimala and two sources of fertilization viz. poultry manure @ 6 t ha^-1 and 100% inorganic fertilizer constituting urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum and zinc sulphate @ 150, 100, 70, 60 and 10 kg ha^-1, respectively. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. Variety and fertilization singly or in combination showed significant effects on most of the yield attributes of aromatic rice. In case of variety, Chinigura produced the highest grain yield (4.18 t ha^-1), biological yield (11.50 t ha^-1), whereas BRRI dhan34 produced the highest straw yield (8.04 t ha^-1). Inorganic fertilizer performed better than poultry manure with respect to yield and yield attributes except harvest index (%). In case of interaction, the highest grain yield (4.23 t ha^-1), biological yield (11.76 t ha^-1) and harvest index (36.81%) were found from Chinigura fertilized with inorganic fertilizer, whereas the highest straw yield (8.22 t ha^-1) was found from BRRI dhan34 fertilized with inorganic fertilizer. There was also significant difference on grain quality such as protein and starch content. The highest protein (10.31%) and starch contents (70.53%) were found from Chinigura fertilized with poultry manure. Economic analysis showed that poultry manure was profitable compared to inorganic fertilizer. The overall result suggests that Chinigura can be cultivated using poultry manure @ 6 t ha^-1 for getting quality grain and good net return in the agroclimate condition of BAU.

Objectives:

To Characterize the selected aromatic rice varieties through morphological parameters.

To study the effect of poultry manure and inorganic fertilizer on the growth, yield and quality of some aromatic rice varieties of Bangladesh with good net return.

Methodology:

The experiment was set up at the west side of the central farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the aman season (July to December, 2010). The experiment was carried out with two factors viz. (i) Variety i.e. Kalizira, BR-5, BRRI dhan34, Chinigura and Tulsimala. (ii) Fertilization i.e. 100% inorganic fertilizer and poultry manure @ 6 t ha^-1. The total experimental area was 650 m² and the size of each plot was 10 m² (4m x 2.5m). The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications and total number of unit plot was 30. The full doses of TSP, MoP, gupsum and zinc sulphate at rates of 100, 70, 60, 10 kg ha^-1, respectively were applied one day before transplanting in 15 plots. The urea was applied in three splits at 15, 30 and 50 days after transplanting (DAT), respectively. Poultry manure @ 6 t ha^-1 was applied in another 15 plots. All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Kalizira, BRRI dhan34 and Chinigura were harvested plot-wise at maturity on 4^th December, 2010. Tulsimala and BR-5 were harvested on 15th December, 2010. Ten hills were randomly selected and were cut off the soil surface and brought to the laboratory to record the yield and yield contributing characters. The N content of grain was determined by micro-kjeldahl method (AOAC, 1980). Protein content was computed by multiplying the N content by a conventional factor of-6.25. Starch content of grain was computed by multiplying the glucose content by another conventional factor of 0.9. The glucose was determined by Fehling’s method with the use of alkaline solution of copper salts. Profitability of aromatic rice with inorganic fertilizer and poultry manure was measured in term of gross return and benefit cost ratio. Data recorded on different parameters were compiled and analyzed in proper form for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance was done with the help of computer package MSTAT.

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of the results it may be concluded that Chinigura economically exhibited best performance regarding yield attributes, yield and quality with respect to protein and starch contents which was identical with BRRI dhan34 treated with 100% inorganic fertilizer produced better grain and straw yield comparing poultry manure. But poultry manure improved the quality of both grain and straw of the aromatic rice varieties.
