Problem Confrontation of Potato Growers in Use of Agricultural Credit, Preservation and Marketing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to determine the extent of problem faced by the farmers in respect of cultivating potato in the two aspects namely use or agricultural credit, preservation and marketing and to explore relationships between problem faced by the farmers in respect of cultivating potato and their seven selected characteristics. Data wee collected by personal interviewing from 80 farmers selected randomly from a population of 800 under Saltia union of Gaffargaon Upazila of Mymensingh district. In potato preservation and marketing it was found that majority of the farmers (66.25 percent) had high problem compared to 33.75 percent having medium problem respectively. In using credit, it was found that majority of the farmers (52.50 percent) had high problem compare to 38.75 percent and 8.75 percent having medium and low problem respectively. The comparative problem confrontation by the farmers in two selected aspects was shown by the problem facing index (PFI). The PFI indicated that the farmers had highest problem in potato preservation and marketing as shown by the PFI of 266. Extent of problem faced in using credit came next in rank as shown by the PFI of 244. Statistical tests showed that age, education, agricultural knowledge, annual income, farm size, extension contact and social participation of the farmers had significant negative relationships with their problems of potato cultivation.

Methodology:

Only the farmers who are directly involved with potato cultivation of chorgorompur, Dhamail and Shilashi villages of Shaltia union under Gaffargaon Upazila of Mymensingh district constituted the population of the study. Thus 800 farmers were the population of this study. Data were however, collected from a sample of 10 percent of the total population i.e. 80 farmers selected by simple random sampling procedure. The researcher himself collected the data by interview procedure. An interview schedule was prepared in Bangla to collect the required data for the study. The schedule included simple and direct questions and also contained some appropriate scales. Problem faced the farmers in two aspects of cultivating potato were the dependent variables of the study. The aspects were use of credit, and potato preservation and marketing. The dependent variables were measured by using a three-point rating scale. An individual farmer indicated the extent of his problems againt three response continuum such as much little and not at all with a weight age of 2, 1 and 0 respectively for each or the 5 items in this scale. Thus. problem facing index (PFI) for each aspects of the problem could range for 0 to 20. A problem facing index (PFI) wax calculated to ascertain the extent of problems faced by the potato growers.

Achievement/Findings:

The study investigated the extent of problems faced by the farmers in cultivating potato in two selected aspects namely use of agricultural credit and preservation and marketing in potato cultivation. The findings indicate that the farmers faced considerable problem in all aspects of cultivating potato. However, the extent of problem faced by them in preservation and marketing of potato measures was the highest. Agricultural marketing is the major problem of agricultural improvement in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, marketing of perishable crop like potato is affected by its nature, climatic conditions, availability of transport facilities, nature and size of market demand and the efficiency of information system. If potato is not stored properly it causes enormous damage due to sprouting, water loss and rottening. The farmers are compelled to sell major pan or their produce immediately after harvesting at a very low price, mainly because of not even temporary storage accommodation being available to them. Farmers who are financially solvent can invest money to use quality seed, fertilizer, irrigation, pesticides etc. in time. The solvent farmers face less problem than the poorest farmers. This study revealed that the low income farmers faced high problems in cultivating potato. It has been observed that about 72.5 percent of the farmers had either low or medium annual income and only 27.5 percent of them had high annual income.
