Minimizing Irrigation Demand by Utilizing Rain Water for Rise Based Cropping Irrigated Environment -1997

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to compare irrigation demand between two selected cropping patterns for maximizing rain water utilization and minimizing irrigation water demand in irrigated cropping and to determine the economic benefits of different cropping patterns at BRRI farm, Gazipur in 1997. Two rice based cropping pattern were tested. The pattern T₁ was non rice-rice-rice and pattern T₂ was rice-fallow-rice. Pattern 1: Grain and straw yield of gram were 1021 and 2052 kg/ha in rabi season. In aus season, average grain and straw yield of rice were 3994 and 4507 kg/ha. Rice was grown in rainfed condition with 860 mm rain water. Water use efficiency (WUE) was 72 percent. In Aman season, average grain and straw yield were 4817 and 5086 kg/ha. Irrigation and rainfall amounts were 370 and 410 mm during growing period. Water use efficiency was 62%. Total cost, gross return, net returns and BCR were analyzed. Total cost and gross return of T₁ pattern were tk.53352 and 94711, respectively. Net returns ad benefit cost ratio (BCR) of T₁ pattern were, respectively tk.41359 and 1.77. Pattern T2: In boro season, average grain and straw yield of rice were 4754 and 5106 kg/ha. Total amount of irrigation and rainfall were 1015 and 315mm in the growing period. Water use efficiency was 72%. In Aman season, average grain and straw yield of rice were 4820 and 5115 kg/ha. Irrigation and rainfall were used 371 and 410 mm in the growing period. Water use of efficiency was 63%. Total cost and gross returns of T₂ pattern were tk.50358 and tk.76084. Net returns and benefit cost ratio (BCR) were tk.25724 and 1.51.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur in 1997. Two rice based cropping pattern were tested. The pattern T₁ was non rice-rice-rice and pattern T₂was rice-fallow-rice. Every pattern was replicated thrice. Seepage and percolation was measured by using a meter scale installed in the paddy field. Evaporation and rainfall data were collected from the physiology division, BRRI. Irrigation cost was calculated on the basis of tk.4.38 per mm of irrigation water as considered in CDP report (April 1995). Five square meter of each plot was harvested to determine the grain and straw yield and grain was finally adjusted at 14% moisture level. Seedling spacing was 15*20 cm and fertilizers were applied at the rate of 80-60-40 kg/ha NPK for rice. The seed rate for gram was 40 kg/ha in the rabi season and it was grow in rainfed condition.

Achievement/Findings:

Water used in T₁ pattern was 1640 mm and T₂pattern was 2111 mm. Under T₂ pattern about 30% higher water was needed than that of T₁pattern. Economic analysis showed that both patterns were economically profitable but T₁ pattern was more profitable than T₂ pattern.
