Poverty Reduction of the Rural Women of Mymensingh Participating in Asa Activities

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main purpose of this study was to determine and describe the poverty reduction of the rural women participating in ASA activities in Boira union of Mymensingh Sadar Upazilla. The study also explored the relationship between rural women's 12 selected characteristics (independent variables) and their overall poverty reduction (dependent variables). The 12 characteristics include age, education, husbands education, family size, working family size, homestead size, family income, credit availability, ASA experience, time use, husbands support and health care. Data were collected form the sample or randomly selected 110 rural women out of a total population of 512 involving 215 ASA groups. Education. husbands education, family income, credit availability and ASA experience of rural women had positive relationship with their overall poverty reduction. However, age, total family size, working family size, homestead size, time use, husbands support and health care were not related with rural women's poverty reduction.

Objectives:

1. To determine and describe the extent of poverty reduction of the rural women participating in ASA activities.

2. To explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of rural women organized by ASA and their extent or poverty reduction.

Methodology:

The study area encompasses all the villages and groups under Association for Social Advancement (ASA) in Boira union of Mymensingh Sadar Upuzilla consists of 9 villages. All the rural women or Boira union under ASA activities were considered as the population for this study. The population of such rural women was 512. Data for this study were collected from a sample rather than the entire population. Double stage sampling method was used to select the sample. Boira union consists of 25 groups under ASA. Firstly, 40 percent of the groups were randomly selected from Boira union. Thus 10 ASA groups were selected. Secondly, 50 percent of the rural women were randomly selected from each ASA group. Total number of rural women of 10 selected groups were 214, while each group comprised or 17-23, women. Thus 110 women were finally selected by using, random numbers. These size rural women constituted the sample for this study. The researcher herself collected data for this study with the help of interview schedule. Simple and direct questions and some scales were included in the interview schedule. Data obtained from the respondents were compiled, tabulated and analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study. Qualitative data were converted into quantitative data by means of suitable scoring techniques. Poverty reduction of the rural women participating in ASA activities was the dependent variable for this study. Twelve characteristics of the rural women were selected as independent variables for this study. Twelve characteristics of the rural women were selected as independent variables. ASA experience time use, husbands support and health care. Statistical measures such as number and percentage distribution, range, average, standard deviation and rang order were used in describing the findings of the study. For exploring the relationship between poverty reduction of the participating rural women and their selected characteristics. correlation analysis and 't' test were used. Ten percent level of probability was used as the basis for rejecting any null hypothesis. Age, education, husband's education, total family size, working family size, homestead size, family income, credit availability, ASA experience, time use, husband's supports health care were the independent variables and poverty reduction of the rural women was the dependent variable.

Achievement/Findings:

Poverty reduction of the rural women participating in ASA activities has changed significantly. More and more involvement of the rural women with ASA is need. The Government of Bangladesh has taken poverty reduction at the top of priority list. At present there is no strong linkage between Go and NGO's for collaborative activities. ASA experience will be helpful for poverty reduction of the rural women. Rural women are encouraged to be involved with various poverty reduction activities by different NGO's working at different places allover the country. Future study are needed to improve poverty alleviation with respect of ASA.
