Effects of Planting Time and Bulb Size on the Seed Yield and Quality of Summer Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was under taken at Agricultural Research Substation, Thakurgaon during the rabi season in 2005-06 to find out the optimum planting time and suitable bulb size on the seed yield and quality of summer onion. The highest seed yield (551.67 kg/ha) was obtained from 1 November planting, which was at par (541.67 kg/ha) with 15 October planting while the lowest (428.50 kg/ha) seed yield was found in 15 November planted bulb. The highest (588.00 kg/ha) seed yield was received from larger bulb, followed (532.22 kg/ha) by medium bulb, while the lowest (414.44 kg/ha) seed yield in very small size of bulb. In the case of combined effect of planting time and bulb size, the highest seed yield (663.33 kg/ha) was produced by larger size bulb planted on 1 November, followed (626.67 kg/ha) by 15 October planting and large bulb treatment combinations. The lowest (363.33 kg/ha) seed yield was found in very small sized bulb planted on 15 November treatment combinations.

Objectives:

To study the effects of planting time and bulb size on the seed yield and quality of summer onion.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Substation, Thakurgaon during the rabi season in 2005-06 to study the effects of planting time and bulb size on the seed yield and quality of summer onion. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with three replications. Three planting time viz. 15 October, 1 November and 15 November were consisted as the first and four bulb size; large size (6.77 g), medium size (3.89g), small size (3.69g) and very small size (2.10g) were consisted as the second factor. The unit plot size was 1m×1m. Distance between block-to-block 1.0 m and plot-to-plot 0.5m was maintained.

Manures and fertilizer were applied according to SRC (2003). Onion bulbs were planted at a spacing of 25 cm × 20 cm. Irrigation, weeding and control of diseases & insects were done as when needed. Matured seed umbels were harvested in several installments when 20-30% capsule were splitted and exposed their black seeds. Umbels were harvested in the morning to prevent shattering of seed. Data were taken on different parameters and statistically analyzed.

Threshing, cleaning, drying and storage: Umbels of onion seed crops were dried and the seed was threshed by beating the umbel with soft and small stick. Winnowing manually and dried cleaned seeds by spreading in the open sunlight on brown paper until they reached safe moisture content (7%).
