An experiment was conducted by RCBD with three replications at the Field Laboratory of the Dept. of Crop Botany, BAU, Mymensingh from January to April 2008 to investigate the effect of Miyobi (Plant growth regulators) on the yield attributes of onion cv. Taherpuri. Four treatments of Miyobi (T1= control, T2= 2, T3= 3, T4= 4, T5= 5 mgL-1) were sprayed on onion plant at 40 DAT. The collected data were analyzed statistically by DMRT using the statistical software, MSTAT-C. Results indicate that application of Miyobi increased morphological growth and yield contributing characters at the conc. of up to 4mgL-1. The highest plant height, leaf number, leaf length and breadth, pseudo-stem diameter, root number, root length, total dry mass production and absolute growth rate was recorded at T4   followed by T3 and the lowest at T1. The maximum bulb yield (11.38 t ha-1) was recorded at T4. Bulb length, bulb diameter and single bulb weight which was statistically similar to 3mgL-1.  T5 had the adverse effect on yield attributes indicating inhibitory effect on onion. So, Miyobi with 3 or 4 mgL-1 may be applied for increased bulb yield.

To study the effect of Miyobi on growth, morphological features and yield attributes of onion.

The experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory, Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from 15 January to 10 April 2008. The soil was silty loam in texture, high land belonging to the Sonatola Soil Series of Grey Floodplain  under AEZ-9. Plant material (Onion variety, Taherpuri) was used in the present experiment.  The seedlings of onion were collected from local market of Sutiakhali, Mymensingh. The plant growth regulator (Miyobi) was collected from Dr. Yasuo Kamuro, Marketing Director, BAL Planning Co. Ltd., Ichinomiyo, Japan. It is a mixture of more than one growth hormones and the composition of the hormone is till unknown. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD with 5 treatment and 3 replications. Four concentration of Miyobi (dissolved in water) and control is termed as T1= control, T2=2, T3=3, T4=4, T5= 5 mgL-1 sprayed on leaves of plants at 40 DAT. The unit plot size was 2 m x 2 m with block to block distances (1.0m) and plot to plot distances (0.5 m). Plant to plant and row to row distance were maintained at 15 cm. The land was ploughed and cross-ploughed three times followed by laddering to obtain the desire tilth. All the stubbles and uprooted weeds were removed from the land. The fertilizers (cow dung 3000 kg, urea 180kg, TSP 200kg, MP 170kg and gypsum 120kg per hectare were applied as BARC. Well decomposed cow dung was applied before final ploughing. Total amount of TSP, MP, gypsum, and 50% of urea were applied as basal dose. The remaining 50% urea was applied as top dressing at 40 DAT. The seedlings were transplanted in the afternoon on 15 January 2008 following drop irrigation, gap filling and necessary weeding. Irrigations were done twice at 30 and 60 DAT. Spraying of Miobi was done on onion plants at afternoon by a hand sprayer. To control leaf blotch, fungicide (Rovral) was applied two times at 70 DAT in 10 days interval. The crops were harvested when 80% leaves fallen over. The plots were harvested separately and tagged and brought to the threshing floor. The tops of onion were removed by cutting the leaves 2.5 cm away from the bulb. The first crop sampling was done from 50 DAT to 95 DAT at 15 days interval. Ten plants were selected from each plot. Absolute growth rate (AGR) was calculated as per the formulae of Hunt (1978). AGR is the rate of dry matter production per unit of time per plant calculated as AGR =.W2-W1/(T2–T1)g plant-1 day-1,where W2 and W1 are the DM at time T2 and T1, respectively. Morphological parameters and yield contributing characters were also measured. The collected data were analyzed statistically following by ANOVA and the mean differences by DMRT using the statistical software MSTAT-C.
